Welcoming and Opening Remarks – President Janet Dudley-Eshbach o Dr. Dudley-Eshbach opened the meeting by welcoming the group. o President Dudley-Eshbach reported on information from the Maryland General Assembly operating budget discussions. Indications are that cuts will be made in Governor O’Malley’s proposed budget. Reductions will be made in pension PAT Meeting March 27, 2014 Page 2 payments by $200 million. This cut is necessary to avoid reducing State agencies further or increasing taxes. There is a plan to replenish the pension fund within five years. Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA) and merit increase remain intact: 2.5% merit on April 1, 2.5% merit on July 1 and 2% COLA in January 2015. 2. o Caruthers Hall is in the process of being demolished. Groundbreaking for the Academic Commons is scheduled for April 24 at 1 p.m. o Facilities master planning is underway and the consultant is conducting various input sessions on campus. The President encouraged all to be involved. o A new stadium is under design. The new structure will increase the visibility of East Campus and showcase our athletic programs. Campus Security Incident – Chief Edwin Lashley o 3. On the evening of Wednesday, March 26 an undercover police operation resulted in a suspect harming two police officers and then alluding police heading in the direction of the University. The University’s response was to initiate a lockdown of all buildings. Those buildings were searched and deemed safe and any student, faculty or staff member was escorted out and to a safe location. The SU Police were commended for their rapid and appropriate response. University Governance o Faculty Senate – Dr. Elizabeth (Beth) Ragan i. The SU Bridge Advisory Committee will discuss a replacement for Fall Fusion. The Summer Advisory Committee members are currently being selected and are charged with communicating with the administration over the summer months. ii. Discussions on how best to revise and update the Faculty Handbook are underway. iii. Faculty elections are underway. o Adjunct Faculty Caucus – Tim Robinson i. The first draft of the Adjunct Faculty bylaws has been written. ii. The Adjunct Faculty Caucus is reaching out to the campus community to raise awareness of adjunct faculty concerns and promote inclusiveness. o Staff Senate – Steven Blankenship i. Plans are being finalized for Employee Appreciation Day to be held the beginning of June. The Staff Senate is asking for feedback from last year’s event. They are requesting names of potential speakers or presenters. PAT Meeting March 27, 2014 Page 3 o Student Government Association – Jerrad Pawar i. Jerrad reported on planning of events for Spirit Week to be held in October. ii. The Big Event will be held on Saturday, April 12. The community response has been tremendous this year, with many people calling before the announcement went out. Over 600 students are already registered to volunteer. o Graduate Student Council – Tabatha Beck i. The Graduate Student Council participated in the SU March Job Fair with a table offering information about graduate student positions. ii. Campaigns for new officers are underway. Most of the current officers will be graduating and it could possibly be a completely new group of officers next year. 4. Middle States Self Study – Kara Siegert, Melanie Perreault o 5. International Students and Visitors Update – Brian Stiegler o 6. Dr. Stiegler reported on delegation visits from administrators of Xinhua College of Sun yat-Sen University, University of Malaga and Anqing Normal University. All visitors have been very impressed with Salisbury University and expressed interest in sending a greater number of exchange students. Perdue Entrepreneurship Competition – Bob Wood o 7. Kara reported that the Middle States accreditation evaluation process is currently underway. This spring the steering committee will develop a self-study design and research questions, which will then be reviewed by our Middle States liaison. Over the next year work groups will be formed, reports will be issued and several drafts will be generated. The campus community will have an opportunity to evaluate the final draft before the full evaluation team comes to campus. The final report will be submitted in January 2016 and the final visit will be in March 2016. Dean Wood reported on the upcoming Perdue School of Business Entrepreneurship competitions. SU students from all disciplines are eligible to participate for part of the $51,000 prize money. Original proposals for a business start-up or for the transformation of an existing business will be evaluated. Data Privacy and Security Initiative – Simeon Ananou o Simeon reported on recent data security breaches at institutions of higher education. He provided examples of how breaches happen and steps that are being taken to try to prevent a similar event happening at SU. o Simeon suggested that the following steps be taken to help keep the system secure: i. Protect your password. PAT Meeting March 27, 2014 Page 4 ii. Be aware of sensitive information stored on your computer and other data devices, including cloud based services. Delete if possible. iii.
