. Served as second reader for Daniel Duplantier’s Honors Thesis, “The Effectiveness of Informal

. Developed three new Upper Division Sociology Courses: American Dilemmas (Soc 336C), first
taught in the Spring of 2001; Globalization (Soc 340C), first taught in the Fall of 2003, and the

. Attended multiple university graduation ceremonies as part of the Sociology Delegation (May 2006,

. Over the course of multiple semesters, I’ve taught courses for such specialized College and University
programs as the Texas Interdisciplinary Plan, the Supplemental Instruction Program, Longhorn Scholars
and the Bridging the Disciplines Program.
. Supervising Lauren Stone’s Urban Studies Senior Project, which will focus on homelessness in Austin,
TX (Spring 2010).
. Supervising Nicole Clonts’ Bridging the Disciplines research project, which will focus on affordable
housing in Mexico, the United States, and elsewhere (Spring 2010).
. Served since the fall of 2009 as the faculty sponsor for Improving Education Worldwide, a newlyformed student organization aimed at raising money to support building schools for impoverished children
in developing nations.
. Taught two classes entitled “Social Democracy in the Age of Globalization” for the Liberal Arts Honors
Colloquium (July 24, 2009).
. Served as second reader for Anna Pierce’s Humanities Honors Thesis, “Low-Income Community
Organizing and Access to Green Jobs in Austin” (chaired by Bjorn Sletto) (Spring 2009).
. Participated in sophomore advising for the Liberal Arts Plan II Honors Program (Spring 2009).
. Served during the fall of 2008 as the Sociology Department’s representative to the Liberal Arts
Academic Affairs Committee.
. Reviewed applications for admission to the Texas Interdisciplinary Plan, a highly selective
program for first-year students in the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Natural Sciences
(Spring 2006, Spring of 2007, Spring 2008).
. As part of a UT System wide effort, and at the request of the Liberal Arts Dean’s Office, I provided
feedback on the Social Science “College Readiness Standards” developed under the auspice of the Texas
Education Agency and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The development of these
standards was mandated by the Texas State Legislature to improve students’ pre-college educational
experiences, thereby improving their chances of succeeding at the college and university level (December
2007).
. Served since December of 2007 as a member of the Faculty Advisory Board for Act Local-Think
Global, a UT student organization that seeks to raise awareness about global issues.
. Participated in a student-faculty panel discussion on “Poverty, AIDS, and Globalization,” sponsored by
the UT chapter of Sigma Lamba Gamma National Sorority, a Latina-based campus organization (April 9,
2008).

. Made a presentation on “Participatory Democracy in the Age of Globalization” to Oxfam-UT
(April 10, 2007).
. Made a presentation on “Minorities in Health Care” to the UT chapter of Mexican American
Health Professions Organization (February 20, 2007).

. Served as second reader for Kristin Cornelius’ Plan II Honors Thesis, “Amigos de las Americas in
Paraguay: The Assessment of the Viability of an International Non-Governmental Organization.
Kristin’s thesis was chosen as one of several “Model Theses” out of all of the Plan II theses
submitted in the spring of 2006. (chaired by Bryan R. Roberts) (Spring 2006)

entitled “An Overview of Globalization” (January 17); the second was entitled “Toward a Global

. Served as a speaker at a Globalization Teaching Workshop at St. Edward’s University (May 8,

. Served as a panelist for a Globalization Forum (February 29, 2004). Sponsored by the Texas Fair
Trade Coalition and the Gray Panthers of Austin.
. Made a presentation on “Comparable Worth” to the Austin Area Employers’ Collaborative (March 20,
2003).
. Served from 2000-2005 as a founding member of the Texas Pay Equity Committee. I was heavily
involved each year in the planning and implementation of Austin’s Equal Pay Day rally and press
conference. I also made several television and radio appearances to discuss the problem of gender and
racial/ethnic pay inequity. Although most appearances were local, one was with KERA (90.1 FM), the
NPR affiliate in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
. Served from 2002-2003 as a member of the City of Austin’s Affordable Housing Task Force,
chaired by Mayor pro tem Jackie Goodman. The task force was charged with the responsibility of
developing a feasible affordable housing agenda for Austin.
. Selected as one of five representatives from the University of Texas to participate in a symposium with a
visiting delegation of governmental, economic, and educational leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa (August
2001). The topic of the symposium was “Managing Diverse Communities.” Sponsored by the Diversity
Institute at the School of Social Work and the Center for African and African-American Studies at the
University of Texas at Austin.
. Served from 2000-2001 as a member of the Austin Equity Commission (chaired by Ray Marshall, UT
Professor Emeritus and former U.S. Secretary of Labor). The Commission was appointed by the Mayor
and the City Council to study the widening income gap in Austin and recommend policies to help alleviate
the problem. The final report was presented to the City Council on August 23, 2001. Since then, I have
spoken to several community groups (e.g., Community Action Network and the Homeless Task Force)
concerning the final report and its recommendations.
. Served as Coordinator of the activities comprising Austin’s International Women’s Day Community
Media Festival (March 8, 2000). This position involved overseeing and coordinating all staff and
volunteer activities associated with the festival. It also involved addressing an IWD rally at the Texas
Capitol concerning the gender and racial/ethnic wage gaps, as well as appearing on KUT’s (90.5 FM)
Eklektikos and Access to discuss these same problems.
