Three steps in developing a rubric:
Within your group. . .
1. Identify at least one measure for the objective you’re working on. (You
may need to take another look at the objective. The verb is what matters
e.g., you might want students to integrate, compare, or generalize.)
2. Using the objective, identify the traits you’ll use to evaluate this aspect of
the measure. Traits are neutral nouns or noun phrases. For example, the
Writing faculty has identified “Content,” “Organization,” “Style,” and
“Mechanics” as the four traits it uses to evaluate essays in Writing 150.
Within your group, you may have time to identify and agree on just one trait.
Try for three!
3. Select one trait and identify 3-5 characteristics of “Excellent” for that
trait.
