They must also address the same departmental and curricular specifics. However, honors courses differ in that they should compel students to address the subject area in more depth and breadth, preparing them to engage in the scholarly and professional conversation by means of conference presentations, publication in honors journals, etc. Communication In addition to meeting the college core competencies, a student in any honors course must be able to do the following: Condense and communicate the essential points of a longer research project in a presentation to the class; such a presentation might include visual components, oral components or both. Demonstrate the ability to present research in a conference or seminar-style format. Engage with classmates and the instructor in a respectful, rigorous discussion of course material and subject matter. 1. In addition to meeting the college core competencies, a student in any honors course must be able to do the following: Clearly identify the main problems, questions, or issues raised within the scope of the course, and respond thoughtfully to such problems, questions, or issues. Demonstrate advanced proficiency in the ability to select, analyze and evaluate the accuracy, credibility, and relevance of primary and secondary sources. Read and synthesize substantially more, or more advanced, material, including primary source materials where feasible, especially scholarly writing or media within the academic discipline. 1. Community/Global Awareness and Responsibility In addition to meeting the college core competencies, a student in any honors course must be able to do the following: Participate in an out-of-class educational experience related to the content of the particular course. Such an activity may include but is not limited to an out-of-class assignment to a museum, community center, or other site of cultural, social, or academic significance. Students must also articulate the value of such an experience, preferably in writing. Compose original written work with the eventual aim of presenting such work at conferences. Develop the ability to integrate knowledge within the course itself and to extend that relationship to not only other courses but other disciplines. Compose a ten-to-twelve page, thoroughly documented research paper (or appropriate disciplinary equivalent), on a subject pertaining to the course material. Develop an appreciation of his or her potential as an active learner and the desire to pursue knowledge independently. 1.
