Stat 502 Spring 2010 Syllabus Stat 502 June 30, 2010 ● INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Arnold, 313 Thomas, sfa@stat.psu.edu ● PREREQUISITE: STAT 501. Many of you do not have this prerequisite, which has been all right in past. More important is that you have had a basic stat course (like STAT 500) fairly recently. ● TEXT and COVERAGE: the Second Edition of Design of Experiments: Statistical Principles of Research Design and Analysis by Robert Kuehl. We will cover Chapters 1-10, and 13-17. ● SOFTWARE: The course will use the Statistical Software program Minitab 15. ● CONTENT: This is a course in ANALYSIS of VARIANCE (ANOVA), including randomization and blocking, single and multiple factor designs, crossed and nested factors, quantitative and qualitative factors, random and fixed effects, split-plot and repeated measures designs, crossover designs and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) ● HOMEWORK: Due every Wednesday. After the first assignment, we won’t use Minitab until after the first test. After the first test all hw will be done using minitab ● TESTS: Three open-book in-class exams on Wednesdays July 14, July. 28 and August 12. ● PROJECT: Each student will find an interesting ANOVA or ANCOVA data set from his or her own area of application, analyze it and write a report on it. It will be due on April 23 (no regression or count data examples). It must have at least 3 pages of discussion, not just a statement of results ● GRADING: I don't like to put a lot of pressure on students. In order to get an A or an A-, you need to do a satisfactory job on all the tests, on the homework and on the project. To get an A you need to do well on all three tests. Last summer, 21 people took Stat 502. Of these 21 students, 18 got A’s and 3 got A-‘s
