ANALYSIS OF CENSUS RESULTS FOR EVIDENCE – BASED DECISION MAKING “2009 KENYA POPULATION AND HOUSING CENSUS RESULTS” Background The 2010 round of census • Conducted in August 2009 • Results released by end of August 2010 • Planning for analysis done in November 2010 • Consultant were identified from various institution across the country to work with KNBS Staff • Technical Assistance was provided by US census Bureau team Background … The analysis was done in consideration of; • The continuing/emerging issues related to population and development • The current government policy frameworks and development goals • Various data sets (past censuses and sample surveys) used to address levels and trends of Key Demographic Indicators • Various methodologies applied for comparison purposes Why the Analysis? The analysis was conducted to; • Address data requirements for the government • To monitor the implementation of its – development blue print – The International development goals – Implementation of the new constitution • Address the needs of other data users including the general public Reports Developed Divided into two subject areas; • Population dynamics – Fertility and Nuptiality – Mortality – Migration – Population Projections • Socio-Economic Dynamis – Disability – Education Reports developed … – Urbanization – Labour Force participation – Housing – Gender Dimension – Household and Family Dynamics – Housing conditions, household amenities & Assets • A Census Atlas was also developed to show spatial distribution of the indicators across the country Accomplishments • Development of the volumes (data analysis, write up, peer review, editing and formatting) • Printing of all the volumes – done by March 2012 • Continuous dissemination of the results as need arises and on request Pending Activities • Court case to be dispensed with before the reports can be fully utilized • National Launch of the volumes • Dissemination of the results in the volumes across the country Funding Sources • UNFPA - Kenya Country Office • Government of Kenya • Other development funded special volumes depending on their interests Challenges • Funding the development of the various volumes • Capacity to develop the reports • Political interests • Other competing activities in the Bureau Other Reports being developed • • • • • UNFPA - Kenya Country office is currently supporting the development of extra volumes depending the issues that are currently emerging/ of interest namely; The Elderly and vulnerable groups The Adolescents and Youth Informal Settlements Emigration Livestock Way Forward • Ensure that the court case is dispensed with • Conduct a national launch of all the volumes • Dissemination of all the volumes across the country • Dissemination of the volumes through requests • Complete the development of extra volumes • Disseminate the extra volumes • Embark on the preparation for the 2019 Census under the 2020 round of census
