Legal Externship – Summer 2016
WASHINGTON, DC
The Criminal Investigation Division is the law enforcement component of the IRS.
Criminal Investigation’s highest priority is to enforce our country’s tax laws and support
tax administration to ensure compliance with the law and combat fraud. Criminal
Investigation maximizes the impact of criminal enforcement and encourages voluntary
compliance through a communication strategy that effectively uses publicity, education,
and outreach.
A Legal Extern in CI will report directly to the Chief, Criminal Investigation Division who
is an attorney. The legal intern will perform the following types of duties:




Conduct legal research and prepare written documents in the areas of criminal law,
criminal procedures, and employment law.
Research social media to include current court decisions and DOJ policy to ensure
CI’s policies are up-to-date and in line with other law enforcement agencies.
Partner with Criminal Tax Attorneys to discuss the legal impact of court decisions
and current trends that impact criminal investigations.
Review press releases for the Chief, CI.
 Review seizure laws on crypto currency versus traditional assets.
Preference will be given to students with the following:



Must be a JD or LLM Student
Strong research and writing skills
Must be a United States Citizen
