SAB Meeting Minutes for Monday, May 17, 2011 Meeting Start time 4:11 pm Community Concerns: Legacy groups met with The Daily last Wednesday. A summary of an agreement will be given to Venetia. A workshop for the editors will be organized by Victor Flores. Talked about posturing articles, vocabulary, conversations rather than reactions, and a continuing effort to work with the daily to change the pattern. The goal is to influence the training that Daily hires gets. They are supposed to tell you about their angle. Dr. Sheila is concerned that a conversation about the Dream Project has been printed in The Daily. The meeting was a legacy meeting and there seems to be a breech of trust with issues concerning the Dream Project funding in comparison to the funding of the ECC communities. The story is to be printed May 17th, 2011. Do we want this type of sensationalism and conflict to play out on the pages of The Daily? Dalia has contacted Hyatt, and she will be here shortly. The Dream Project was started in the ECC communities. Concerns about the project has to do with who is in this program, or more privileged students working in communities of color on social justice issues, and whether or not the class is enough, and how this program is working with affiliated programs. Hyatt spoke with Grant Twitchel. She is writing a lifestyle story. Approached Hairston and Chaz about the story with the angle of concern with the diversity of the Dream Project Program. The concern is that the Dream Project people are hearing from a reporter that there is negative perspectives about the project. Hyatt mentioned to Grant that OMAD had a concern, and she admits that should not have. SAB members are concerned that meeting space is not a safe place because it may turn into a lead for a story in the Daily. There is discussion about the protocol for working with The Daily. SAB thanks Hyatt for her responsiveness to our concerns! Student Evaluations of Advisors: The instrument is in the fine tuning process. It will be uploaded to Catalyst and tested. It is proposed that the survey will be ready for distribution by the end of the quarter. Diversity Requirement on the Senate floor for a language requirement. There is concern that students with disabilities may not be able to meet the requirement. Sponsored by Kenneth Shotwell. Student senators may propose legislation without asking students who my be involved with certain groups. He is proposing that since students with disabilities are exempt that all students should be exempt. Concern that he may be making a political ‘play’ for nominations in the Student Senate. ASUW jobs are available for next year. Check the ASUW website. It would be a good idea for students of color to get involved. Arts, entertainment, off campus housing are some of the jobs outside of school politics for students. May 18th, 2011 is the deadline for Vice Provost Financial Planning Committee. This is very important because UW has tuition setting authority. SAB Meeting Minutes for Monday, May 17, 2011 Meeting Start time 4:11 pm SAB Nominations for next year: Please ask your group members to consider being a SAB committee member. Attach a copy of the Roster to the SAB minutes! Come next week ready to nominate. Dr. Sheila has Updates: Resident/non-resident mix for UW admissions. State legislature is still in special session. OMAD has been working on the assumption that they would be working with 150 less students next year. Wide outreach has been initiated. May 1 was the deadline for to turn in their intent to enroll. Concern that students may not turn it in because of the required fee, in particular for low income students. May find a way for students to opt out of the fee, and or give scholarships for the enrollment fees. 107 Native American students last year, doubled the number of Pacific Islander students. There is a waiting list, but it is small this year. Transfer admissions will be considered next. Thank you for your efforts to recruit new and diverse students! We’ll begin the evening with a fun and expressive performance by Deaf actor and artist, Patrick Fisher (aka Mr. Shineyhead), as he presents “A Storytelling Extravaganza: A sign mime performance with poetry, comedy, and dark tales.” His performance will include a mix of short stories, including stand-up comedy about his life experience through the hearing-world. All of the stories are produced with amazing use of classifiers and sign mime, and are excellent examples of the range and complexity of American Sign Language. Afterwards, we welcome community members, ASL students, Deaf performers and actors, etc. to perform signed skits, stories or poetry. If you are interested in performing at the event, please email a short description of your performance to asuwswdc@uw.edu. *Event Details:* Mr. Shineyhead presents: “A Storytelling Extravaganza!” Date/Time: May 28, 2011, 7-9pm Location: Parrington Hall Commons (Room 308), University of Washington For more information or to send submissions, email asuwswdc@uw.edu. *Every Body Freeze, Now!* *Flash Mob for Disability Awareness* 12:20pm @ Red Square *Every Body Freeze, Now* is a collaborative project to raise disability awareness by gathering a diversity of people (of varying ability, race, sex, gender, sexual orientation, age, and allies), flooding Red Square, and freezing in unison. Integral aspects of the flash mob will be voice description, ASL interpretation and Braille translations of campus signage to raise awareness of access as well as different ways of perceiving and experiencing Red Square, a public common space. The aim is to create an accessible and inclusive event, drawing attention to disability and other forms of diversity on campus. Stopping people in their tracks, the event invites the passers-by to rethink diversity, the built environment, and dominant ways of processing information.
