SAB General Meeting Minutes for Monday November 1. 2010 Meeting start time 4:02 PM Ice Breaker Introductions Vice Presidents Corner 1. The Diversity Requirement Issue is revisited. There is an article, “Disequilibrium and Resolution: The nonlinear Effects of Diversity Courses on Well Being and Orientations toward Diversity” by Nicholas A. Bowman, that speaks to the diversity issue. Dr. Sheila assures that there is research available to support the necessity and the effectiveness of such a requirement. Social justice language is necessary to speak to the faculty in convincing them of the need for a diversity requirement. 2. ECC Murals There is above 2% asbestos in the walls here. Preservation presents issues. Expensive and hazardous. Not an option.($138,000 to salvage the original works). Mural in the Chicano Room, ‘Viva la Raza’ can be removed (with expense). New murals cannot be written or painted onto the walls in the new ECC. Commissioning the original artists is still an option. Costs: $5-7,000 to digitally capture the images There is a $50,000 budget to save the murals. All options must work within this budget. Members expressed concern that images may lose some of the original artistic values. Digitizing will make the images easy to crop to present the most original presentation. The cost for reproducing the art on the new windows of the ECC is estimated at $10$20 per square foot. May bring in models of the proposed window to the next general meeting. Murals will be preserved in another form or medium. Need cost estimates for artist commissions. Where to place the smaller images has yet to be decided. Suggestions mentioned: Call for proposals from student artists, club proposals, contest for art in the new ECC Members should report to respective groups about the possibility.
