We need more time to discuss
this in a way in which we get
more voice from certain
respective communities.
Is there any way P.I. can have
their own room
Keep historical names for 4
meeting rooms. Discuss Asian PI
room naming at next SAB
meeting.
I approve to keep the original
room names (replace “/” with
“and”). I do not approve of
adding “Latino” to “Chicano.”
I am extremely frustrated with
the organization of this meeting.
I wish this information of the
rooms was released to us much
earlier. Prior to 5 min ago I had
no idea of these issues and
would have prepared differently.
We need more time.
1) If we want to “keep” history:
--keep four; transfer into the
four equal rooms, amend
“Asian/PI” to “Asian & PI”
2) If we want Asian and PI split
equally:
--Four equal rooms -> Black,
Chicano, Native, AND QPOC
room + multipurpose room =
Asian & PI
The “Black” room should be
renamed. As it is, it muddles the
diversity of culture. “African”
and “Black Americans”
experience are not the same and
should not be under the
umbrella term “black.”

We agree on keeping the original
rooms and splitting the Asian
and PI rooms. We do not feel like
we could take sides on the
Chicano and Latino issue
because we do not identify with
either.
Keep the original for rooms.
I feel the four names should be
named the same with the split of
the PI and Asian room and they
should have a forum to decide.
(on back) What’s more
important than the room
naming?
Keep the history, keep the four
names
Need more time to talk. I
personally feel that the PI and
Asian to split. Our communities
don’t identify culturally as one.
We should split the rooms and
further discuss this amongst our
groups and come back (which
room will be named Asian and
PI).
To respect and honor our history
the room names should remain
as the historical room names. I
object against both amendments
because they come with too
many technicalities involving
identity and feelings.
My personal opinion after this
discussion is that the four names
should remain as they are. I’ll
have another discussion with my
group, though.
I think it’d be good to have a
history hall filled with historical
displays, artwork, etc., to convey
and pay homage to all culture
and encompasses the whole
building with culture. I strongly
would argue for the split
between Asian / PI room.

1) Asian room only
Keep 4 names originally there. If
changes w/ Asian & PI room are
made, it would be great to have
African/Black (or vice versa)
room instead of Black room.
Multipurpose room should not
be named.
Continue with option 1 and I
disagree with not splitting up
Asian Pacific Islander room but
for the sake of time we need to
make a decision quickly.
Whatever decision is made
regarding the Asian/PI room, we
should consider more options
later to make a room of equal
size and make as the other four
conference rooms.
I agree with keeping the
historical names with the
exception of splitting the PI
room. There should be a black
room, chicano room, native
room, Asian room, pacific
islander room if PI still wants to
propose the option.
Keep all 4 original names. Black,
Native, Chicano, Asian & PI. 2
smaller conference rooms
remain not named.
As a PI I believe that the rooms
should be split but due to the
size difference having the room
as Asian and Pacific Islander
I agree to keep the original four
names and replacing the slash
with the word “and” so it would
read “Asian and Pacific Islander
Room.”
Could the multipurpose be
named the Asian and PacificIslander room since it can be
split in two and wouldn’t
minimize the identity of those
cultures and could still have their
space. And the other meeting
ASUW QSC
rooms could be called another
name that all would agree on
like the “Power Room” or
“Power to the People” room.
We need more time please. Split
the Asian & PI room!
I agree with keeping I would not
name the original four names.
The conference rooms. In the
large multipurpose room put
progressive (current)
movements of all the 4 main
communities. I would change it
to “Asian and Pacific Islander
Room” due to room constraints.
Additional notes are as follows. All are copied exactly as written, except for additions for grammar or
missing words, which will be [written in square brackets like this.]
Luz from MEChA talked about including Chicano/Latino names. Thought Asian and PI should be
separate.
Jessica agrees that Asian and PI should be split. Doesn’t think many people identify as Chicano, so isn’t
sure about 2nd amendment.
Luz says no word can encompass all of what people identify with.
Cynthia representing Lambda Theta Alpha said they think Latinos is more broad than Chicanos.
Apa’au said the identity “Chicano” came about during the 1960s revolutions.
Marisa Herrera (ECC Director) said that “Hispanic” used to be ok but that has changed. Words can [have]
different meanings and we don’t know where we will be in 10 years.
Kris said she doesn’t like the title “Black Room” since the other names refer to cultures [and] not a color.
Jonathan said that many students in the ECC identify as “black,” it unifies.
Luz said the rooms were named a certain way because they meant something back then. Times do
changed, but they were named that way for a reason.
Marisa Herrera said she uses many terms to identify herself.
Jonathan says there are many alumni who are attached to these original rooms. Would we be
disrespecting our founders to change the names?
Jessica said this is an opportunity to make our own history now.
Jonathan said our orgs are in a hard spot since the founders are committed to the names.

4 names - > 5 rooms
Continue the history of the ECC
o Actually changing the names would defile history; preserve history!
Split the Asian and Pacific Islander Rooms
Chicano is not a racial identity, it is a political ideology
La Raza as a name?
To add “Latino” to “Chicano” would be regressive after agreeing to split up “Asian/PI.” For the
sake of consistency, “Latino” should be added to Chicano.
