Lauren A. Shurman Experience Lauren Shurman is a partner in the Litigation group and focuses her practice on general commercial and employment litigation. Lauren has litigated complex commercial disputes in federal and state courts and in arbitration, and has represented clients in administrative proceedings before the Utah Labor Commission, the Utah Public Service Commission, the Utah State Tax Commission, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the U.S. Department of Labor, and the Utah State Board of Education. She represents employers in matters relating to employment discrimination, harassment, wrongful termination, the Family Medical Leave Act and non-compete agreements and trade secret law. She also advises clients on personnel policies and has assisted employers in developing employee handbooks. Before joining Stoel Rives as an attorney, Lauren was a summer associate in the Salt Lake City office (2004, 2005). D&K, 196 P.3d 588 (Utah 2008) – obtained a favorable ruling that landlord did not waive its right to evict tenant. 2006, cum laude Represented a pharmaceutical skin cream manufacturer against product liability Moot Court Board Member Stanley Star Scholar claims. Obtained dismissal of all claims based on statute of limitations grounds. Represented a franchisor in asserting claims against franchisee and guarantors for Editor-in-Chief, Alaska Law Review franchisor on all claims and successfully moved to dismiss counterclaims for breach of fiduciary duty and breach of contract. Employment Litigation Represented a food manufacturer and distributor against disability discrimination claims asserted by a job applicant. Obtained dismissal of administrative appeal based on applicant's failure to mitigate damages. Defended a chain of convenience stores against Title VII national origin discrimination and retaliation claims brought by a former store manager.
