Division, Objective
8A
The Work Experience 48, 97, and 98 classes passed
Curriculum Committee as of Spring 2000. These Work
Experience classes can be offered as Living Skills
classes (thereby partially fulfilling the GE requirement in
this category) as of Fall 2001.
1b
Increase student enrollment in the WEX classes by using a variety of
advertising tactics
One-Stop Center,
including
CalWORKS,
placement goals for
SCC students
Members representing the One Stop Center and I visited
a number of classrooms during the first four and the last
three weeks of each semester, advertising the One Stop
Center, with special emphasis on the WEX program and
Career Services; an increase in student drop-ins (at the
Center) was a result of this effort. Additional advertising
tactics included flyers; newspaper and newsletter articles
on internships; emailing weekly internships to everyone
on the Microsoft Outlook Exchange resulted in a steady
increase in student enrollment in the WEX classes.
1c
Increase student enrollment and retention in WEX classes by offering
two online classes
Consortium of online
classes currently
offered at SCC—
plans to expand
number of online
classes offered at
SCC
Two online courses—one full semester and one second
nine week—were offered in Spring 2001. Both classes
were at 50+ students each, which added to the the
student numbers. The specific target audiences—
technology students and working professionals—greatly
benefited from these courses. The evaluations of both
classes were excellent; many students stated that they
would return in the Fall 2001 to take the next WEX
online class(es).
Goal 2: Track completed Title V documents of all WEX instructors (to meet regulations stated under Title V)
Title V compliance
2a
A majority of instructors teaching WEX classes saw the need
Establish alliances with Division Deans regarding encouraging their WEX
instructors to submit, in a timely fashion, all completed Title V documents
each semester
for establishing a central point of collection for Title V
documents and have complied.

Justification
(Theme 1): Align existing Work Experience Internship Program to meet student needs: In order
to provide students with an education that prepares them for successful employment, the WEX
Program needs a full-time clerk to assist in internship growth in underrepresented areas, a
tracking system that charts student retention in the Work Experience classes and internships, e.g.,
matching students with potential internships, tracking students’ Title V documents for assessment
and auditing purposes. (Theme 2) In addition, the clerk could track the progress of current WEX
students, thereby keeping more accurate records of academic at-risk students and students’
demographics for report purposes.
(Theme 5): Systematizing the integrating processes: The Title V documents are an integral part
of internships and the accompanying Work Experience classes. Such documents are mandated
by the State of California Department of Education and assist the Coordinator and WEX
instructors in tracking student progress in the workplace. (Theme 1): Title V documents are used
extensively in student portfolios; specifically, these documents display to potential employers
(within an interview setting) the student’s experience within his/her major. Often the internship is
the only experience the student has that directly relates to the position for which s/he is applying in
the workplace. Such experience is invaluable to the student’s obtaining a position.
(Theme 1): Align existing programs to meet student needs: Through class and employer
presentations, inform the audience(s) of the availability of a class the gives students and
employees academic credits for their workplace hours and enhances the soft skills of students and
employees in the workplace (skills taught are tied into SCANS).
(Theme 1): Align existing Work Experience Internship Program to meet student needs: In order
to provide students with an education that prepares them for successful employment, the WEX
Program needs course content that reflects accurately the current employment trends of private
industry and state agencies.
