EE 340 Design Project 061 Design of a capacitor A capacitor is an electrical device that consists of two conducting surfaces filled with a dielectric material. As you know from your course, we have 5 types of capacitors 1. Parallel plate capacitor 2. cylindrical capacitor 3. Radial capacitor 4. spherical capacitor 5. Conic capacitor. You have a conducting sheet that cost p1 SR per cm2, and a dielectric material with a dielectric constant r 100 . The dielectric material costs p2 SR per cm3. Design a capacitor that results in the cheapest cost per nF. In your design you should: 1. Justify which type of capacitor above you choose. 2. Show all your calculations that lead to the cheapest cost. 3. You do not have to derive the expressions of the capacitance of the above capacitor, instead you can use the expression in the book. For instance, if you choose a parallel plate capacitor with area A (in cm) and separation d (cm), then: You need to compute the price of the conductor P1= p1 x 2xA. The price of the dielectric material: P2= Axd x p2 . the total cost is P=P1 + P2 in (SR). If the capacitor has C (in nF) then the cost per nF is P/C, and this should be the cheapest. Good luck. The report should be well written and handed any time before the last days of classes (Wednesday January 17th, 2007).
