Air Gap Capacitor
a. An air gap parallel plate capacitor is charged to voltage Vbattery. After the ammeter
reads zero current, indicating full charge, the switch is opened to remove the battery from
the circuit. What is observed on the Voltmeter and Ammeter when a dielectric material,
with dielectric constant r (at zero frequency, i.e., DC), is inserted into the capacitor air
gap? What happens to the capacitance value?
b. The cheesy drawing above is reminiscent of the awful graphics we faculty endure in
some student dissertations. Use Word Draw to make it much better (or PowerPoint
Draw, if Draw isn’t installed on your version of Word). Provide not only the drawing but
also the printed version. For full credit, it must print without jagged edges.
