The Blazing Fire By Troy Macclure A devastating house fire blazed for hours last night on Chicago’s Southside. Two people in the home were seriously injured and hospitalized. The fire is believed to have started in an upstairs bathroom from an unattended lit candle. 21-year-old Bob Jenkins and 18-year-old Sam Jenkins, brothers and both students at the University of IL Chicago campus were at home on a semester break from school when the fire started. They were both asleep and almost didn’t make it out in time. Their family dog alerted the brothers, but not before they had inhaled a significant amount of smoke. The house was recently remodeled, but did not have working smoke detectors, which contributed to the brothers’ serious injuries. High winds and the extremely dry weather conditions made it very difficult to fight the fire. It wasn’t until several hours after the start of the fire that firefighters finally got the blaze under control. As daylight breaks, it is clear that little remains of the house that once stood. Fire ravaged this single-family home on Chicago's southside.
