The programs on the student netbooks are very impressive—there are
many educational games such as Virtual Microscope, fractions games, a fun
physics game, brain games, programming for kids, a webcam, a flashcard
program, and much more!
These programs are also on your teacher computer. Here is how to access
these programs.
*You will notice a small blue and white cube on your dock called Virtual
Box. This is the application that will allow you to see what the students will
be using on the new netbooks. It can run simultaneously with your
macbook applications – meaning you can easily flip back and forth without
having to restart your laptop.
*To launch, click on the blue and white cube icon and then click the green
Start arrow. The program will run briefly, showing a series of black and
white screens. When you run it for the first time, you will get some
messages that you can click not to show again.
Explore some of the icons on the home screen - there are some really great
games and some tools which are similar to Microsoft Office. Scroll along
the bottom of the screen and click on the icons in order to access the
educational games, graphics, Office products, and more. The best way to
learn is just to play with it.
*To exit the program, click VirtualBox VM at the top of the screen and scroll
down to Quit Virtual Box to exit.
*On the next screen, keep the setting of Send the shutdown signal and click
OK.
*On the next screen, you will be prompted for a SHUT DOWN on the
screen, but note that just shuts down the student software--your actual
laptop will not shut down. You may come across a message that you can
click not to show again.
*When you get the screen Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager, click the red dot
to exit the student programs.
