The University of Sheffield has provided courses in initial teacher education (ITE) for over 50 years. The PGCE course prepares students to teach across the 11-18 age range in English, Geography, Mathematics, Modern Languages and the Sciences. Job Role You will work as part of the PGCE team who will support you in contributing to the co-ordination of the PGCE Sciences course. This will include teaching the PGCE Sciences course, providing pastoral care for students, liaising with partner schools and organisations and undertaking some administrative responsibility for the course. Job Description Main Duties and Responsibilities Teach on the Sciences PGCE course. Supervise students on School Experience. Provide pastoral care to students. This will involve being a personal tutor. Contribute to links with partner schools in the local region. Interview potential students. This will include assessing applications, carrying out interviews and providing feedback. Contribute to university-based mentor meetings. Plan and prioritise own daily work and monitor the work of students on a daily basis. Plan for teaching ahead for new course delivery. Deal with reactive requests, such as those relating to teaching, student support and administrative tasks, on a daily basis. Any other duties, commensurate with the grade of the post. Person Specification Applicants should provide evidence in their applications that they meet the following criteria. Criteria Essential Desirable Qualifications and experience 1. Have a good honours degree in a relevant subject area (or X equivalent experience). 2. Proven teaching ability, with a teaching qualification. X 3. Previous experience of successful teaching within the secondary X school system. 4. Awareness of recent developments in the secondary school X curriculum. 5. Knowledge of policies relating to the secondary school system. X Experience of professional development work with PGCE students or teachers. 6. Awareness of research in science education and experience of/or X interest in, developing a research profile. 7. A relevant PhD (completed or close to completion, or equivalent X experience). Management skills 8. An ability to complete teaching-related administration (e.g. in X relation to course management). Communication skills 9. Effective interpersonal skills to work with students and X colleagues, and as part of a team 10. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal. X Team working 11. Experience of working effectively both independently and X collaboratively. Personal effectiveness 12. An ability to motivate students in their academic work and to X contribute to their pastoral care. 13. A commitment to high quality teaching and administration.
