Pursue the extraordinary Overview About the Department With over 40 members of academic staff, over 80 researchers, over 120 postgraduates and over 500 undergraduates, the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering at the University of Sheffield is one of the largest departments in the UK, attracting students from all over the country and around the world. At the University of Sheffield there is a fine tradition of engineering education going back over 100 years and the Department maintains an excellent reputation for both teaching and research. The Department is ranked consistently amongst the best UK Civil Engineering departments for teaching (according to UniStats and student satisfaction). In addition, the Department also runs a fruitful Industrial-Partnership scheme whereby representatives from companies regularly review our curriculum, and also serve as industrial tutors for our students. This fundamental link with industry is particularly relevant to our teaching of Structural Design, which is an area we wish to strengthen with the appointment of a University Teacher. Job Role As a University Teacher, the main tasks of the successful candidate will be to contribute to the teaching of design in our undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Job Description Main Duties and Responsibilities Deliver high quality and interesting undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and assessment in the area of Civil Engineering design and/or Structural Engineering design through taught courses and project work. Design new course materials and review/update existing learning and teaching materials. Help to develop the Department’s educational relationships with industry, and keep abreast of changes in industry practice and relevance for our course materials. Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate projects and dissertations. Contribute to the management of the teaching of Civil Engineering design and Structural Engineering design Contribute to the administrative duties of the Department. Any other duties, commensurate with the grade of the post. Person Specification Applicants should provide evidence in their applications that they meet the following criteria. Criteria Essential Desirable Qualifications and experience 1. Good honours degree (or equivalent experience) in Civil X Engineering. 2. Chartered Engineer status. X 3. Proven ability to deliver academic teaching. 4, Recognised teaching qualification 5. Significant practical experience in Civil/Structural Engineering. 6. Knowledge of British Standards and Eurocodes. Benefits Terms and conditions of employment: Will be those for Grade 8 staff. Salary for this grade: £37,756 to £45,053 per annum pro-rata. Potential to progress to £50,688 per annum through sustained exceptional contribution.
