The Faculty of Social Sciences is a large and diverse grouping of thirteen departments that offer professional educat ion alongside more traditional social science disciplines. This rich and excit ing disciplinary mix encompasses both world-leading academic research and educat ion and a strong pract it ioner focus in part icular areas. It uniquely posit ions the Faculty among Sheffield's peer inst itut ions.
The Department of Polit ics is one of the UK’s most successful centres for teaching and research. This was confirmed in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), when the department was ranked first equal amongst all politics departments in the UK. We also pride ourselves on our outstanding reputat ion for teaching, with excellent sat isfact ion rat ings in the Nat ional Student Survey (2012 = 95
%). Undergraduate students are recruited to three single and five joint honours programmes. We have a strong Graduate School, with a suite of Masters programmes and a thriving community of research students. It is the department’s object ive to maintain this high performance, as well as contributing in a variety of ways to the pract ice of polit ics, thus addressing the ‘impact’ agenda. Our students and staff come from a diverse background. Our operat ions are underpinned by a team of ten administrat ive staff in full- or part-t ime posts within the department.
The department has broad coverage of the discipline, with well-established strengths in governance and public policy, internat ional relat ions, polit ical theory, comparat ive polit ics, polit ical analysis, polit ical economy and development. Geographically, our expert ise is part icularly strong on British and
European Union politics, but ranges widely from Africa and the Balkans to Cuba, as well as covering global governance, and we would consider positively area specialisms that enhance the department’s geographical expert ise. Specific research themes are diverse and range from such issues as polit ical engagement, mult i-level governance, ethnic conflict, global healthcare, immigrat ion, environmental polit ics, delegated governance and the state, to Europeanizat ion and animal rights. The department is strongly committed to dialogue between the sub-disciplines and holds regular departmental seminars.
On-going themat ic seminars are also held on governance and participat ion, political economy, internat ional relat ions, as well as on political theory and global just ice. Inter-disciplinary links are encouraged within the Faculty of Social Sciences, such as through the Sheffield International
Development Network (SIDNET), the Sheffield Political Economy Research Inst itute (SPERI) or at the interface between politics and law, while links beyond the Faculty are maintained in such areas as polit ical philosophy, healthcare and environmental issues.
