of study allows you to choose from a selection of modules taken from our current PGT courses. Please note
however that Visiting PGT students do not receive an award at the end of their time here.
You can apply either if you are currently studying on a PGT course at another institution or have recently done
so. Should you require a further application form, please download the application form from the link below.

Please note that these are regular postgraduate degree classes, normally taken by full
postgraduate degree-seeking students, who already have an in-depth knowledge of
the postgraduate degree subject(s) and will often have studied the subject(s) at
undergraduate level. A Visiting Student’s academic background in a particular subject
therefore needs careful consideration.
Please contact the Visiting Student Assistant if
you have difficulty locating more specific information about the content of modules
(Marj Bonsall at M.Bonsall@sheffield.ac.uk).
B Credits
Individual modules are normally worth 10 or 20 Sheffield credits (although some do
have a higher or lower credit value). As a Visiting Student you may select up to a total
of 60 credits for one semester, or 120 credits for a full academic year, however these
are the maximum number of credits for which a visiting student can register. You may
choose a minimum of 10 credits. Please note, however, that you are not eligible to
receive an award upon the successful completion of your studies as a Postgraduate
Visiting Taught Student. You may have a transcript record of your studies and/or a
supporting letter from the academic department in which you have studied instead.
Please consult the “Directory of Modules” to find out when your module is being
taught, this could be the Autumn or Spring Semester to make sure it is available when
you wish to study with us.
You may find that there is no direct mention of your particular major in the list of
departments given above. This does not necessarily mean that the courses you need
are not offered at Sheffield. Listed below are some examples of such possible majors
with suggested departments where relevant modules should be found.

The Module (Course) Selection Process
All of The University of Sheffield modules are listed in a document called the
‘Directory of Modules’. This is a web- based guide, which gives a list of ALL the
university’s academic departments and the modules they offer. As explained
previously, Visiting Students are currently only permitted to choose modules from
the departments listed above under ‘Introduction’. Please keep this in mind
once you access the Directory.
Here is a suggested brief guide to choosing your modules:
1.
Visit the Directory of Modules at the following web address:
http://wwwonline.shef.ac.uk:3001/pls/live/web_cal.cal3_dept_form?p_year=15
2.
Click on the department(s) you are interested in.
3.
A list of modules will appear. Only look at postgraduate level modules. This is
indicated by the number given after the letter code of each module.
Postgraduate modules are normally numbered from 4 onwards.
4.
Please click on the individual module titles which interest you to receive a brief
description.
5.
If the module information you find is still insufficient for you please don’t
hesitate to contact the Visiting Student Assistant so that you can be put in touch
with an appropriate member of staff at Sheffield who will be able to assist you.
6.
Continue the above process until you have selected the modules (courses) you
wish to study at Sheffield. Please note that 120 credits is the maximum credit
load you will be able to study in an academic year.
If you have any questions or queries before you submit your application please feel
free to contact the Visiting Student Assistant.
Good Luck with your application
Information for Visiting Taught Postgraduate Students
In order to apply as a Visiting Student you should be aware of the following points.
This form of study is for a fee-paying student who wishes to undertake specific
modules, either for interest or to add to their current studies which are currently been
undertaken at another institution. He/she will undertake this exchange on an
individual basis and be aware that any recognition of these studies is entirely a matter
for their own institution. The fees and modules are agreed in advance with the
department concerned at our institution.
An application form is available which can be emailed and then returned to us. There
is no charge for the application, nor is there a deposit charged on acceptance.
Scheduling and staff changes may mean that a module is not available. In that case an
academic adviser will discuss alternative module options with you.
Application Schedule

Your application form and supporting documents are copied to each of the
departments in which you have indicated you would like to take modules
(courses).

Decisions on whether to accept Visiting Student applicants are normally made
within 6 weeks. However you should be prepared for delays at certain times of
the year, including holiday and examination periods.

On receiving responses from all departments concerned, The Admissions Service
will send you a decision letter.

If you have been successful you will also receive a Reply Slip and accommodation
brochure. You must send back the Reply Slip to the Admissions Service, or email
with a reply as soon as possible. This will let us know whether you still wish to
proceed with your application. You should send the form back, or reply by email,
even if you do not wish to continue with your application.

Only after the Admissions Service receives your Reply Slip, will you start to
receive official documentation from other departments within the university,
such as our Pre-registration Pack. Although Accommodation is not guaranteed
for Visiting Student it is possible to apply and if there is availability it will be
allocated. Details of how to apply will be sent on receipt of your acceptance.
Accommodation Services will then send you confirmation of your
accommodation and allocation details as quickly as possible.

For full year and semester one students you will be sent a Pre-registration pack
by Student Services in approximately June/July. This will include various
documents, some of which you will need to complete and return to the
University. Semester 2 students will have this information sent out mid
December.

Full academic year and semester one only students should arrive at the University
of Sheffield in time to participate on the optional International Student
Orientation Programme and mandatory Intro Week. Autumn semester classes
officially start on 29 September 2014.

Semester two participants should arrive in time for the mini Orientation
Programme. Spring semester classes officially start on 9 February 2015.
It is possible to attend for the Full Academic Year, Autumn or Spring semesters, or for
one module only. However, attendance for the full 15 week period (semester) is
essential in order to complete both the teaching and assessment elements of the
module/s.
