STUDENT GOVERNANCE COUNCIL SGC Meeting 12/03/2004 SUPPORT FOR STATE FUNDING OF UW-SYSTEM DISABILITY RESOURCE CENTERS IN THE 05-07 BUDGET BIENNIUM Sponsored by: Student Governance Council in support of Campus Accessibility Campaign Whereas, one of the UW- System goals is to increase diversity, and its students recognize the importance of giving students with disabilities the services they need to be successful. Whereas, the Department of Vocational Resources has cut the federal funding for UWSystem Disability Resource Centers that it once supplied for programming, counseling and services that benefits students with disabilities. This has led to a budget shortfall of $524,900. Whereas, necessary services for students with disabilities will have to be cut if this funding is not replaced in the state budget. Therefore, the members of the SGC do resolve as follows: Be it resolved The UW-System and its students feel that the line item in the Regent’s Budget under the cost to continue section entitled, “Maintaining Services for Students with Disabilities” is imperative to maintaining the current services offered to students with disabilities throughout the UW-System. Be it further resolved, That Gov. Doyle should forward this line item, with full funding, to the State Senate and Assembly in his budget proposal for Wisconsin’s next biennium. Be it finally resolved, That this student government fully supports all the UW-System’s Disability Resource Centers and urges the Governor and the Legislature to replace lost federal funds with state general public revenue dollars, enabling our universities and colleges to educate all students accepted into them.
