The Later Colonies Carolinas • Originally land between VA. And Spanish Florida. • Southern part is settled mainly by persons from Barbados (Sugar and Slaves)—Becomes South Carolina. • They bring with them slaves and want to replicate the plantation system. • Grow Rice and Indigo instead of Sugar. • Church of England (Anglican). North Carolina • Settled by backcountry people from Virginia. • Most are subsistence farmers. • Can’t grow rice or indigo. • Some grow tobacco. • some Slaves. • Anglican. Georgia • Founded by James Oglethorpe. • To be for English debtors. • Rules are strict: No slaves or alcohol. • People are supposed to grow mulberry trees to make silk. • Anglican. What eventually happens in Georgia • They see how rich people in S. Carolina are getting with slaves and growing rice they begin to do so as well. • Copy South Carolina Pennsylvania • Founded by William Penn. • Set up for Quakers (Society of Friends). • Open to all religions. • Cool to the Native Americans—buy land instead of take. • Ethnically diverse • Besides English Quakers • Also Germans (Duetsch) • Scotch-Irish • Penn gives friend a chunk of land that becomes Delaware. New York • Originally settled by the Dutch (New Netherlands). • British capture and rename New York. • Allow Dutch and Swedes to stay. • Very ethnically diverse. • Small part becomes colony of New Jersey. Characteristics of the 3 Colonial Regions • New England—Founded by English Puritans. • Not very diverse. • Economy based on Shipbuilding (shipping), logging & fishing. • Religion = Puritans (Congregationalists) Middle Colonies • New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. • Most ethnically diverse. • Religiously diverse. • “Bread Basket”—wheat, Rye (as well as pork and beef). Southern Colonies • English Anglicans and African slaves. • Slaves are the majority. • Some Scotch-Irish. • Plantations and subsistence farmers. • Cash crops = Tobacco (Upper South) Rice and Indigo (Lower South).
