CLASS TIME & ROOM: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:00 to 9:15, AH177 PREREQUISITE: Management 2400 th COURSE MATERIALS: Fundamentals of Corporate Finance – 5 Cdn edition Ross, Westerfield, Jordan, Roberts - McGraw Hill COURSE OBJECTIVE: After completion of this course, the student will understand (at an introductory level) risk and return relationships, securities market, time value of money, security valuation, capital budgeting, and working capital management. In addition, the student will be able to perform basic analyses of financial statements, solve simple time value of money problems, value traditional debt and equity securities, estimate costs of long and short term capital components, and analyze projects using capital budgeting techniques. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Grades will be determined by: 2 Midterm Exams (25% each) 1 Final Exam 1 Assignment 50% 35% 15% Exams - each exam will cover assigned chapters, discussion in class, handouts, videos, webcasts and any other material assigned. The final exam will be cumulative, covering all material in the course. First Midterm Tuesday October 10 Second Midterm Tuesday November 14 Final (TBA) Assignment - The assignment is a group report (maximum of five students per group). The actual assignment will be discussed in class early in the term. The completed assignment should include: (a) a cover page with the names of each group participant; (b) a footer with the page number; (c) a header which includes the names of each group participant. The assignment is due at midnight, Friday, December 1, 2006. Weighting and time of writing of any exam or assignment cannot be shifted, except when a documented, legitimate reason is provided which will be verified (eg. medical reasons supported by a Doctor’s note). Students will not be allowed to return to the exam room once he or she leaves the room; all materials must be submitted (including the exam itself) which will be graded to the extent completed. All exams must be submitted to the Instructor/Invigilator before leaving the room or a grade of zero will be recorded. All University of Lethbridge calendar policies, including Academic Offences and Discipline Procedures, will be enforced. Plagiarism on assignments and cheating during exams will be punished to the full extent allowable by the University. Tutorials Student tutors will be available several hours each week, starting around the first midterm, to provide assistance in solving assigned problems. Hours of availability and location will be announced during class. Attendance is purely voluntary although students in previous classes have found them very helpful in mastering the material. Concept Review & Critical Thinking Questions (end of chapter) It is strongly recommended the assigned Concept Review & Critical Thinking Questions are read and solutions thought through by the student. No written submissions are required. The objective is to provide a short review of material covered in class. Questions & Problems It is strongly recommended students work through the assigned questions and problems (end of chapter). Students are encouraged to contact the instructor by email, during office hours, or by appointment if difficulties arise in understanding the solutions. Exams – format, formula sheet, calculator All exams are closed book and use a multiple choice format. Use of a calculator* (nonprogrammable) and a formula sheet (supplied by the instructor) will be allowed during tests. Understanding formulas is essential to the study of finance, but fluency in the use of a financial calculator will help ensure accuracy and efficiency. Late Submissions A deduction of 5% per day will apply to any late submissions of assignments. This rule is in place to ensure fairness among students. *HP (Hewlett Packard) 10B II is highly recommended. Other acceptable calculators include the T.I. BAII+ and the HP 12C. In class support can only be provided for the HP 10BII. Please do not bring a programmable calculator to exams. Office Visits Any subject of discussion is permissible during office visits with two exceptions: (1) If you miss a class, I will not answer questions about material covered that day. (2) I will not discuss forthcoming exams in the office or outside of class. All students will have the same information concerning exams, so ask questions concerning forthcoming exams in class.
