Notes:
Exams & Assignments
Missed exams and assignments will result in a mark of zero being recorded and will
continue to be weighted in accordance with this syllabus. Weighting and time of writing
of any exam or assignment cannot be shifted, except when a documented, legitimate
reason is provided which will be verified (eg. medical reasons supported by a Doctor’s
note). Students will not be allowed to return to the exam room once he or she leaves
the room; all materials must be submitted (including the exam itself) which will be
graded to the extent completed. All exams must be submitted to the
Instructor/Invigilator before leaving the room or a grade of zero will be recorded.
All University of Lethbridge calendar policies, including Academic Offences and
Discipline Procedures, will be enforced. Plagiarism on assignments and cheating
during exams will be punished to the full extent allowable by the University.
Tutorials
Student tutors will be available several hours each week, starting around the first
midterm, to provide assistance in solving assigned problems. Hours of availability and
location will be announced during class. Attendance is purely voluntary although
students in previous classes have found them very helpful in mastering the material.
Concept Review & Critical Thinking Questions (end of chapter)
It is strongly recommended the assigned Concept Review & Critical Thinking Questions
are read and solutions thought through by the student. No written submissions are
required. The objective is to provide a short review of material covered in class.
Questions & Problems
It is strongly recommended students work through the assigned questions and problems
(end of chapter). Students are encouraged to contact the instructor by email, during office
hours, or by appointment if difficulties arise in understanding the solutions.
Exams – format, formula sheet, calculator
All exams are closed book and use a multiple choice format. Use of a calculator* (nonprogrammable) and a formula sheet (supplied by the instructor) will be allowed during
tests. Understanding formulas is essential to the study of finance, but fluency in the use
of a financial calculator will help ensure accuracy and efficiency.
Late Submissions
A deduction of 5% per day will apply to any late submissions of assignments. This rule is
in place to ensure fairness among students.
*HP (Hewlett Packard) 10B II is highly recommended. Other acceptable calculators
include the T.I. BAII+ and the HP 12C. In class support can only be provided for the HP
10BII. Please do not bring a programmable calculator to exams.
Office Visits
Any subject of discussion is permissible during office visits with two exceptions: (1) If
you miss a class, I will not answer questions about material covered that day. (2) I will
not discuss forthcoming exams in the office or outside of class. All students will have the
same information concerning exams, so ask questions concerning forthcoming exams in
class.
