Why do we need food? • We need food because it provides us with energy for: Food groups • A. Carbohydrates – They contain H,C and O – They provide energy for movement. – They are divided into two main subgroups: • Sugar: chocolate, fruits, candy…. • Starch: rice, wheat, potato…… Food groups • B. Proteins – They provide energy for growth and repair. – They are divided into two main subgroups: • Animal proteins: meat, fish, eggs…. • Plant proteins: soya bean, nuts…… Food groups • C. Fats – They provide insulation and storage. – They are divided into two main subgroups: • Animal fats: butter, milk and dairy products…… • Plant fats: olive and corn oil, nuts…… Food groups • D. Minerals – Needed for our body to work properly. – Iron: for red blood cells. (red meat) – Calcium: for bones and teeth. (milk) – Magnesium, potassium….. Food groups • D. Minerals deficiency diseases – Iron deficiency: Anemia – Calcium deficiency: Ricketts Food groups • E. Vitamins – Are chemicals needed in small amounts. – They do not provide energy. – They are needed for a healthy body functioning. – Vitamin A, B, C and D Food groups • F. Water – 70% of our body is made up of water. – It is very important for survival Food groups • G. Fibers – It is needed for easy digestion. – It prevents constipation and cancer of intestines. – Found in fruits, vegetables and whole wheat bread.
