Student Legislative Intern Office of State Senator Don Humason Description: Legislative intern position working directly with Senator Humason and his staff to assist with constituent services, media outreach and other various administrative duties relevant to the operations of the District Office. This is a hands-on learning opportunity for a student intern who is enthusiastic about government policy, constituent services, and public relations as well as state and local issues. Organization: Office of State Senator Don Humason Administrator: Senator Don Humason & Andrew Renfro (District Chief-of Staff) Contact: Ken Magarian – kmagarian@westfield.ma.edu Number of hours per week: Approximately 12-20 hrs. /week (120-130 hours per semester, flexible), for a 3-credit internship. Academic Department: Open to students from all departments Academic Credit: Upon approval by academic department/faculty member; three (3) credits per semester (wk. journal/report maintained). Responsibilities: Core Duties: 1. Assist the Senator and staff with constituent services. 2. Prepare and gather materials for constituent, press and social media outreach. 3. Researching legislation and policy issues. 4. Other relevant duties as required. Qualifications: Students with an interest in government, history, public service, communications and current events are encouraged to apply. This internship will offer a hands-on front row seat to how the sausage of government is made. The intern will experience all aspects of the job of a state legislator. Ideally the intern will be able to accompany the Senator to the State House to observe formal sessions, committee hearings, and more. Preference will be given to individuals from the 2nd Hampden and Hampshire District which includes the communities of Agawam, Southwick, Granville, Tolland, Russell, Montgomery, Southampton, Easthampton, Holyoke, Chicopee, and Westfield.
