Learn by Camping: Classes for All Crystal Rock Garden Description: Make a crystal rock garden using simple ingredients and rocks Goals: To experience science by watching crystals form on rocks. Objectives: Learn to sterilize water by boiling Learn to wash rocks and pebbles and arrange them in a bowl. Learn that alum will form the crystals on the rocks. Materials: Procedure: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. ½ Cup water 2 oz. alum (sold in the spice or canning section of supermarket) Clear glass bowl Clean rocks and pebbles Mixing spoon Have each participant go outside and gather rocks and pebbles for their garden. Rinse the rocks clean in the sink or water container. Boil ½ cup of water. Add 2 oz. alum to the hot water and stir until the alum is dissolved. Pour the solution into a clear glass bowl. Fill the bowl halfway with the clean rocks and pebbles. Watch in amazement as the crystals form like magic! This science activity is geared for young children. Alice K.
