BEAA ANNUAL REPORT - 2002-2003
INTRODUCTION
This report marks the beginning of a new approach to document the accomplishments of the Bucknell
Engineering Alumni Association. The Board of Directors assigned this task to the Planning Committee
so that the Board, the Association members, the College of Engineering and the University had a
synopsis and permanent record of the activities and accomplishments of the Association. The minutes
of the meetings of the Board of Directors are attached to provide the details of the Board's actions during
the 2002-2003 school year. As with any new venture, we expect that this Annual Report will grow and
evolve to meet the needs of the Association and the College and University.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
By Robert Burnett ‘58
As I tried to put into words the accomplishments of the BEAA over the past few years, I felt a sense of
great pride and happiness for having the role of President of the BEAA Board of Directors over the past
four years. My term as President has gone by so quickly, thanks in large part, to the dedicated
engineering alumni who were active participants in the growth and progress of the BEAA. This farewell
President’s Message has become quite long; but, I felt it important to list all that has happened over the
past few years so that we can take a moment to celebrate the growth of the BEAA in this first annual
report.
If we start on the ground floor of our growth, the implementation of the committee structure was one of
the key factors that helped the BEAA find a way to support the College of Engineering and Bucknell
University involving such areas as Admissions, Affinity/Outreach, and Career Development. The
Committee structure has flourished over the past two years through completing a majority of the work
via conference calls and email as compared to waiting for an on-site meeting of the BEAA. I have
highlighted some of the major accomplishments of our working committees below:
Admissions Committee



2002 - Fully integrated the accepted student calling program with the Office of
Admissions.
2002 - Reestablished women engineering alumni calling “all” accepted women
engineering students under the recommendation of Bucknell’s Society of Women
Engineers who formerly managed the program.
2003 - National Engineers Week pilot program involving engineering alumni visiting
their local schools.
Affinity/Outreach Committee

2001- Sponsored the first annual Cocktails and Contraptions event during Reunion
Weekend.
3
5/31/03
BEAA Annual Report 2002 -2003


2002 - Sponsored the first annual Contraptions and Connections event during
Homecoming Weekend.
Both events have now become annual events sponsored by the BEAA and have helped
increase the University’s awareness of the organization as well as making our
engineering alumni aware that they are members of the BEAA.
Career Development Committee



2002 - Sponsored the first annual Career Networking Night in conjunction with National
Engineers Week. This event has provided an opportunity for our current engineering
students to network with engineering alumni in an informal session at Bucknell. The
event has been a huge success as evidenced by the growth in participation from 2002 to
2003 of both current engineering students (47% increase from 2002 to 2003) and alumni
(50% increase from 2002 to 2003) as reflected in the below numbers:
2002 - 22 engineering alumni returned to campus to speak to 85 students.
2003 - 33 engineering alumni returned to campus to speak to 125 students.
Development Committee

2003 – The BEAA Board has reached 100% participation in annual giving to the
University and the College of Engineering.
In addition to the growth made possible by our working committees, it is important to note several other
areas of progress made by the Board.
Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award
The Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award (DEAA) was established by the BEAA to recognize the
contributions of its alumni who have distinguished themselves through extraordinary commitment to the
College and the University, exemplary professional achievement, or noteworthy contributions.
 2001 - The BEAA presented the award to Lauren P. Breakiron ’52 for his extraordinary
commitment to his alma mater.
 2003 - The BEAA presented the award to Mark Ronald ’63 for his accomplishments, service,
and dedication to his profession.
Planning Committee – reestablished in July 2002.
The Planning Committee was reestablished to serve as the guiding group within the BEAA Board. By
November 2002, the Planning Committee had updated the By-Laws to reflect the changes and growth of
the BEAA, and they produced the first edition of the BEAA Board of Directors’ Operating Handbook.
Executive Committee
The Executive Committee, consisting of the officers and committee chairs of the Board, became an
active group instrumental in guiding the growth of the BEAA over the past two years.
BEAA Board of Directors’ Membership
My personal goal as President has been not only to gain a full board membership of 30, but a diversified
group of 30 active engineering alumni interested in promoting the general well being of the College of

BEAA Annual Report 2002 -2003
Engineering through developing among alumni an active and enduring interest in the affairs of the
University.
In 2002, the Nominations and Membership Committee was restructured to become an active committee
of six members who were then charged with the goal of identifying candidates and bringing the Board
up to an active membership of 30 as stated within the By-Laws.
July 2002 – Seven new members added to the Board.
July 2003 – Eight new members will be added to bring the Board up to its full membership.
Closing
Please join me in celebrating the First Annual Report of the BEAA Board of Directors and all that has
been accomplished over the past two years. It is with great confidence that I turn the Presidency over to
Harry Kitch ’71 in July 2003. I look forward to my new role on the Board of the Bucknell Alumni
Association and hope to continue to work with the BEAA Board of Directors to find ways for the BAA
and the BEAA to continue to develop an active and enduring interest among our engineering alumni in
the affairs of Bucknell University.
In closing, I want to express a special thank you to Dean Jim Orbison, but especially to Lois Engle,
Volunteer Manager, and Angi Fritzges, her assistant, for providing the extensive support we needed to
become an active alumni association.
Thanks to the BEAA Board Membership and the College of Engineering for all your help in making the
growth of the BEAA a reality!

BEAA Annual Report 2002 -2003
DEAN’S MESSAGE
By James G. Orbison, ’75, Ph.D., P.E.
The 2002-2003 academic year has been eventful, and very positive, for the College of Engineering. The
College remains dedicated to its fundamental mission of providing outstanding educational opportunities
to its students, through a commitment to outstanding teaching, student-faculty interaction both within
and outside of the classroom, and significant laboratory experiences integrated throughout the curricula.
This year, all engineering degree programs in the College have undergone formal re-accreditation
reviews by the national accrediting agency, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology
(ABET). Final accrediting actions will occur in July of this year, but top-level accreditation is expected
for all programs. The ABET evaluators judged our educational programs as being highly effective,
delivered to excellent students by highly qualified faculty who are committed to our educational
mission, and to accurate assessment of program educational objectives and outcomes achievement.
In April of this year, the Board of Trustees also authorized construction of the proposed new engineering
building (to be named for lead donors Larry ’52 and Margit Breakiron) to complement Dana. This new
building will increase the space available to the College of Engineering by approximately 45%, and will
consist of 38,500 gross square feet on five floors. The new building, with a total construction cost of
nearly $8M, will be located directly behind the west wing of Dana, and connected to it on all levels
except the basement. The facility will provide new state-of-the-art classrooms, laboratories, project
spaces, student interaction spaces, and offices for the College. On-site construction is expected to start
May 19th, with a final completion date of July 12th next year; we expect to occupy the new building in
time for fall semester of the 2004-2005 academic year. A ground breaking ceremony will be scheduled
in the fall, with formal dedication the following fall (2004).
This fall, our first class of biomedical engineering (BME) majors will enter the College of Engineering
as part of the Class of 2007. Our second full-time BME faculty member, Prof. Samantha Richerson, has
been hired this spring, and will join Bucknell in the fall. Additional tenure-track faculty searches have
been successfully concluded this year as well; new tenure-track faculty will join the departments of
chemical engineering, civil & environmental engineering, and computer science in the fall.
This year, applications for admission into the College of Engineering again increased, up 9% over last
year; a total of 1,455 applications were received for a target enrollment of 175 first-year engineering
students. Approximately 42% of the applicants were offered admission. By comparison, this
acceptance rate ranged from 62% to 79% throughout the 1990’s. The ability to apply to the College of
Engineering without committing at the outset to a specific engineering discipline continues to be
particularly attractive, and gives our entering students a semester’s exposure to all engineering
disciplines through the ENGR 100 Exploring Engineering course before they select an engineering
major.
In February, Mark Ronald ’62 was the recipient of the second annual Distinguished Engineering Alumni
Award, presented by the Bucknell Engineering Alumni Association (BEAA) and the College of
Engineering. Mark is currently president and CEO of BAE SYSTEMS North America, a major
corporation serving the defense industry with over 20,000 employees in North America and annual
revenues in excess of $4 billion.

BEAA Annual Report 2002 -2003
The BEAA continues to provide important and increasing support and opportunities for the College of
Engineering and our students. The BEAA creates and sponsors activities that build affinity with the
larger engineering alumni body, such as the interactive family-friendly events held during Homecoming
and Reunion weekends. The BEAA is helping to develop connections between students, alumni, and
practicing engineers through sponsorship of Career Network Nights during National Engineers’ Week,
and through the identification of internship opportunities in cooperation with our Career Development
Center. BEAA members also assist in the admissions process, serving as resources for admitted
engineering applicants. Through these activities, the BEAA provides a unique dimension that builds
valuable and often lasting connections between our students, our alumni, and the “real world,”
connections that add richness to the broader educational value of a Bucknell engineering education.
I am confident that the future of the College of Engineering is bright, a future of success achieved
through the pursuit of excellence, a continuing commitment to our fundamental educational mission, and
an unswerving dedication to our students, and their future. The Bucknell Engineering Alumni
Association is a vital contributor to our current success, and the successes that lie ahead in the future.
As Dean of the College of Engineering and on behalf of our faculty, staff, and students, I want to thank
Bob Burnett for his effective leadership of the BEAA over these past years, and all members of the
BEAA Board of Directors for their selfless contributions and efforts in support of the College.

COMMITTEE REPORTS / ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Admissions - Shari Aser, Chair
During our Homecoming meeting the BEAA Admission Committee did a lot of brainstorming as to
what else we could do to assist the admissions process and provide opportunities for Engineering
Alumni to volunteer and become reconnected with Bucknell.
We agreed to take on two new initiatives for this year in hopes of gaining greater awareness for the
college and the profession.
We sent out an email to all engineering alumni asking them to contact their local high schools to see if
they could speak with students during National Engineering Week in February. Many secondary schools
already have programs in place to have speakers during Engineering Week. This effort allowed alumni
an avenue to talk to prospective math, science and technology majors at their local high schools about
what engineers do and why students should consider engineering as a possible major in college.
Unfortunately we did not have as much alumni participation as we would have hoped. For 2004 we
have decided to try this effort again but have student ambassadors as well as alumni participation.
The second initiative we undertook has evolved from an admissions fair to increasing the women
engineering enrollment in the College of Engineering. After exploring the college fair initiative and
meeting with the College of Engineering and the Admissions Office, the BEAA’s Admissions
Committee determined it may be more advantageous for the BEAA to continue to support the already
existing Admissions’ events, rather than develop a separate new event, by ensuring there is an
engineering volunteer(s) available to participate in each event. At the May 2003 meeting, the
Admissions Committee developed a five-step approach to increasing the enrollment of women
engineers. The process will begin by contacting all women at the inquiry phase who expressed an
interest in engineering, math and the science, followed by another contact upon applying for admission
to Bucknell and continuing throughout the accepted student calling program and into their first semester
at Bucknell.
In the Spring the BEAA Admission Committee once again, aided the Admission Office by having
Engineering Admissions Volunteers and Engineering Alumni call top prospective engineering students
after they have been admitted to encourage their attendance at Bucknell.
The Admissions committee has made some significant strides in the 2002-2003 academic year. We are
excited about our new endeavors and we look forward to building on this momentum in the upcoming
academic year.

BEAA Annual Report 2002 -2003
Career Development - Kurt Krauss, Chair
The BEAA Career Development Committee completed a number of successful career related objectives
in conjunction with the Engineering College and the Career Development Center (CDC) during the
academic year.
In November 2002, a BEAA board member assisted in sponsoring the successful Biotechnology,
Pharmaceutical, Science & Engineering Career Fair that was held in New Jersey. In January 2003, both
committee and other BEAA board members participated in the regional winter Bucknell career
networking nights held in various cities throughout the country. In February 2003, the committee cosponsored the major function of the year, the 2nd Annual Engineering Career Networking Night on
campus. The successful event included 125 students interacting with 33 alumni to discuss general career
advice, internship ideas, and in some cases full time job opportunities. All of these events were
considered very productive and of great value to the university and will be supported again next year.
In addition to the specific events, the committee supported the continued development of the Career
Connections volunteer database maintained by the CDC. This committee's support will continue as
required to build on the success this system has brought thus far.
The committee looks back at the 2002-2003 academic year and is proud of the value that these
endeavors brought to the students and looks forward to building on this momentum in the upcoming
academic year.
Development - Bob Burnett, Chair
The BEAA Development Committee set a goal of 100% participation of the BEAA Board of Directors
in annual giving for 2002-2003. I am happy to report the goal has been reached.
Membership - Ken Nadler, Chair
Following the procedural outline that was forged by Harry Kitch in 2001, the BEAA Nominations and
Membership Committee had a very successful year in 2002.
Our first goal achieved was to have a full committee of six members. Working through email and
conference calls, the committee reviewed a large number of potential candidates for the BEAA Board of
Directors. The following existing members agreed to accept another three-year term starting July 1,
2003:
Lawrence Brunt (CE ’77)
Brian Hoyt (EE ’87, ’92)
Harry Kitch (CE ’71).
After a diverse “shortlist” was developed , each new potential candidate was contacted personally by a
committee member to explain the activities of the BEAA and the responsibilities of a Board member.
As a result of these contact, the following individuals were nominated and elected to the Board for a
three-year term starting July 1, 2003:
9
5/31/03
BEAA Annual Report 2002 -2003
Debra Apruzzese (CE ’80)
Bradley Mostoller (CS ‘88)
Brenda Lando (ChE ’01)
Thomas Okonak (CS ’97)
Elizabeth Campbell Roman (CE ’91)
Mark Seigler (CE ’67)
Charles Wharton (ME ’63)
Mary Wycheck (EE ’01)
This brings the BEAA Board up to the full complement of 30 for the first time in many years.
New Board officers were also elected for two-year terms starting July 1, 2003:
Harry Kitch (CE ’71) – President
Kurt Krauss (CE ’94) – Secretary/Treasurer
Mary Ellen Foley (EE ’84) – Vice President – Activities
Ken Nadler (CE ‘77) – Vice President - Membership
In addition, it was our honor to select Mark Ronald (’63) to receive the Distinguished Engineering
Alumni Award which was presented during the February 2003 Engineers Week activities.
Outreach / Affinity - Larry Brunt & Doug Sackin, Co-Chairs
The goal of the Affinity Committee is to organize activities and programs to activate engineering alumni
and reconnect them with the College and with each other. This goal is in support of our belief that more
active and connected alumni are more likely to contribute back to the College and the Bucknell
community whether through service, general involvement, or donations. Affinity Committee programs
also raise awareness of the BEAA as a whole and have generated a higher level of interest in our other
activities.
The Affinity Committee has worked toward these goals over the last several years by planning a number
of now regular events for alumni and their friends and families. These include the widely popular
engineering fair at the Homecoming post-game reception. At this event, alumni and their children get to
participate in a number of games and contests for fun and prizes. At recent Reunions, alumni have had
the opportunity to demonstrate their engineering skills in a more dedicated challenge like paper airplane
or boat races or this year's bridge building contest. These events have exceeded our expectations by
bringing alumni back together with fellow alumni and with representatives of the College and the
BEAA.
Now that the committee has established a handful of regular events that alumni can look forward to, we
are working to plan additional events and programs that will target students. The goal of these programs
is to raise the awareness of the BEAA and the engineering alumni community in general so that students
and recent graduates will leave Bucknell firm in the belief that there is an active alumni engineering
community for them to play an active role in. Their belief in this principle will help to make it a reality.
Tentative plans for these events include activities to welcome new students into the College and the
alumni community at the appropriate times and with a proper degree of ceremony.
10
5/31/03
BEAA Annual Report 2002 -2003
Over the last year, the Affinity Committee has been happy to welcome some new members to its ranks.
The energy and creativity these new members bring to the committee will help us to surpass the
successes of our past programs and work towards new programs in other areas. A goal for the next year
is to outline a strategy for working with the student and alumni member community to identify needs
and programs for meeting those needs throughout the stages of an alumnus' involvement with the
University.
Planning - Harry Kitch, Chair
The BEAA Planning Committee was reestablished at the July 2002 Board of Directors meeting
and began work on updating and revising the Association's by-laws and operating handbook. At the
Homecoming meeting, the Board adopted the revisions as provisional amendments, and The Board gave
its final approval at the February meeting. The Committee chaired by Harry Kitch, with Mel Foley, Jim
Gelling, George Lavin, and Aaron Spak, also developed this Annual Report and has the responsibility
for producing it each year.
They are also developing a strategic planning process for the Board to help establish long-range
plans to support the College of Engineering.

ALUMNI AWARDS
Bucknell Engineering Alumni Association establishes the
Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award
In the spring of 2001, the Bucknell University Engineering Alumni Association (BEAA) examined ways
of developing an active and enduring interest among its membership in being involved in the affairs of
the College of Engineering and the University. It became clear that a mechanism for recognizing the
contributions of the College’s outstanding alumni was needed. Bucknell has had a long tradition of
recognizing the contributions of its alumni and the BEAA believed it could enhance that tradition by
establishing an award focused on the contributions of engineering alumni. To that end, the association’s
board of directors established the Bucknell Engineering Alumni Association Distinguished Engineering
Alumni Award in 2001. This award will be given to recognize members of the College of Engineering’s
alumni community who have distinguished themselves through extraordinary commitment to the
College and the University, exemplary professional achievement, or noteworthy contributions to society.
The Bucknell Engineering Alumni Association presented its first Distinguished
Engineering Alumni Award to Lauren Breakiron '52 at a special event held in October 2001.
The award was given to him in recognition of his distinguished service, loyalty and leadership on behalf
of Bucknell.
Breakiron spent 22 years with United Parcel Service, retiring in 1988 as senior vice president and
director. Earlier in his career he was director of industrial engineering for Colgate Palmolive and a
management consultant for Peat, Marwick, and Mitchell.
Breakiron has served as a member of the Board of Trustees since 1995, lending his expertise to
numerous committees. The professional guidance and monetary support provided by Breakiron as the
University explored the possibility of creating a program focusing on the intersection of engineering and
management disciplines led to the establishment of the Institute for Leadership in Technology and
Management.
Continually strong benefactors of the University, Breakiron and his wife established the Lauren P.
Breakiron Charitable Lead Annuity Trust, naming Bucknell as a beneficiary. In 1989 the Lauren P.
Breakiron Scholarship was established which gives preference to students who are U.S. citizens,
majoring in engineering or computer science.

The Bucknell Engineering Alumni Association presented its second Distinguished
Engineering Alumni Award to Mark Ronald ’63 during National Engineers Week, 2003, in
recognition of his accomplishments, service, and dedication to his profession.
Since graduation Ronald has distinguished himself in his profession, beginning his career with
Advanced Engineering, Inc. from 1963 to 1971 where he was responsible for reconnaissance systems,
analysis receiver programs, and advanced receiver techniques studies. From 1971 to 1981, as the
Director for Advanced Programs at Litton Industries, Ronald managed the company’s new business
activities, and from 1981 to 1983 he served as the Vice President, Program Management. As President
and Chief Operating Officer of AEL Industries from 1983 until 1993 Ronald oversaw the company’s
design and manufacture of countermeasures systems, receiver systems, and radar target simulators, as
well as the installation and integration of avionics systems into military aircraft. From 1993 to 1998 he
served as President, Chief Executive Officer, and member of the Board of Directors of GEC-Marconi
Hazeltine, which specialized in the design, development, and production of advanced electronics,
primarily for military applications.
With 35 years of aerospace and defense experience, Ronald currently serves as Chief Operating Officer and
member of the Board of Directors of BAE SYSTEMS plc, and as President and Chief Executive Officer
of BAE SYSTEMS North America, Inc., a leading defense, aerospace, and information technology
company. Under Ronald’s leadership, BAE SYSTEMS North America’s operations have doubled, with
over 20,000 current employees and annual revenues in excess of $4 billion. BAE SYSTEMS North
America is now one of the five leading suppliers to the U. S. Department of Defense, a tribute to
Ronald’s vision, and his leadership.
In recognition of the remarkable service rendered in fostering effective transatlantic cooperation
between the United States and United Kingdom defense industries, Ronald was appointed Honorary
Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) by authority of Her Majesty the
Queen of England in 2002.

Opening Remarks



Bob noted that this meeting with 21 members present was a new high point in BEAA history
with the total number of Board members and the percentage attending was the greatest ever.
It illustrates the new energy, enthusiasm and commitment of the BEAA in supporting the
College and University.
Introductions were made.
The minutes from the July 18, 2002 meeting were unanimously approved.
Administrative Reports
College Update - Jim Orbison, Dean of Engineering
 ABET accreditation review - The review process has been completed although the formal
report has not been received by the College. The extensive efforts by the faculty and staff


necessary to continue to meet the continuing ABET process. The faculty continues to give
well over 100% in their focus on the students.
Admissions - Jim reported that while nationally engineering University applications were
down, the College is doing very well. They experienced zero summer melt in the incoming
class of 2006, a very positive sign.
New Engineering building - Currently the College has approximately $6 million of the
needed $8 million in funding for construction. They are optimistic that the remaining funds
will be forthcoming shortly and the University will approve construction in the spring of
2003, as scheduled. The new building would be ready in the fall of 2004. Efforts to secure
funding for the operation of the new building are continuing.
Planning Committee - Harry Kitch
 Harry presented the proposed BEAA Operating Handbook and By-laws (marked as
"Proposed draft 16 October 2002" and provided to all Board members prior to the meeting).
The Board discussed various aspects and suggested some changes. The Board was requested
to consider the discussion and that the formal request for approval would occur on Saturday
morning.
 The proposed Handbook and By-laws were unanimously approved with two amendments
(revision to organization chart to shows Committee Chairs communicating with the VPActivities and the handbook including the committee chairs to establish annual goals.) The
By-laws become effective as "provisional amendments" for a 60 day comment period and
final adoption at the February meeting.
 The committee also outlined that they would be developing a simple strategic planning
process for the Board, an annual report format and sample goals for the committee chairs.
Affinity/Outreach Committee - Doug Sackin & Larry Brunt
 They reported the committee was ready for the "Connections and Contraptions" event to be
held following the football game in the Fieldhouse on Saturday and volunteers were
requested. BEAA was allocated a prime location at the entrance and everyone was
encouraged to attend.
 They also reported that plans were under way for the events in June during Reunion.
 The committee is developing a draft engagement strategy for the life cycle of a student to
young alumni to an experienced alumnus to keep them involved with the College and BEAA.
Events such as an Engineering First Night, Sr. mentoring, and others are being considered.
Development Committee – Bob Burnett
 Bob reported that he had met with Robert Kallin, VP for University Relations, to establish a
general working relationship between the BEAA and the University with respect to
supporting development activities. There are several changes underway at the university
level and Bob will provide more information at the February meeting.
 The committee will continue to explore ways that the BEAA can support the construction
and operation of the new Breakiron Engineering Building.
 Bob urged all members to participate in the Annual Giving campaign to support the College
and University. Our goal is for 100 % participation from the Board.

Career Development Committee – Aaron Spak for Kurt Krauss
 Aaron reminded all members that they should register on Career Connections so that they
would be available to assist students.
 He summarized the career panels from the previous evening and outlined the preparations for
the February Engineering Networking event.
 The junior intern survey was discussed and it was noted that the Networking event was one
of the events resulting from that effort. Overall the number of internships has increased.
 There was discussion of how to continue to assist students. Dick Ulp recommended that we
develop benchmarks so that we can track progress more easily. Brian Hoyt noted that the
CDC now had a staff person to assist with alumni development.
Admissions Committee - Shari Aser
 Shari reported that she had participated in the BAA admissions committee meeting and that
they were happy to have BEAA involvement. The goals of both groups are similar and both
will be able to work to the same end - getting high quality students to attend Bucknell.
 The committee is considering several activities to assist in the admissions efforts such as a
Book club event at selected high schools, encouraging alumni to participate in area high
school events; especially during Engineers Week and networking with engineering events.
 The committee will be developing materials for alumni to use when visiting schools.
General BEAA activities  Bob represented the BEAA at a session of the Bucknell Alumni Association (BAA) and
provided a brief overview of the mission and goals of the BEAA.
 Scott Singer President of the BAA addressed the BEAA Board and noted that both
organizations have the goal of supporting the University. Scott views the BAA as an
umbrella organization that supports the other allied groups, such as the BEAA. He reported
that they had just provided the BEAA with some funding to help with networking events.
The intent of the BAA is to provide funding for new initiatives to get started until they
develop their own funding base. He urged all alumni to participate in the MBNA credit card
program as that is the source of funding for the BAA. He was very clear that the BAA and
the BEAA can and should maintain their individuality, but can also work together to enhance
Bucknell.
 Board Photos - The meeting adjourned briefly on Friday for the formal Board photographs
taken on the steps of Dana.

Student Society Reports
The representatives of most of the engineering student societies presented a summary of their activities
and plans for the future. A common concern remains their inability to obtain financial support from the
Bucknell Student Government (BSG) based on the unique nature of the membership of the societies they are viewed as academic rather than social groups. The College has been supporting them from the
Engineering Fund but this apparent inequity remains a concern to the Board.

Re-purposing of spaces in Dana: The college is reviewing needs and will stage the
transitioning over the next one to two years.
ABET Accreditation: Review was completed this past fall and all five of the
engineering programs are expected to receive full six-year accreditation. Final
accreditation actions are expected in July 2003.
ABET Assessment Practices: The college will continually review the quality of
the programs, the performance of students and alumni, and will revise and refine
curricula, course content, educational emphasis, and effectiveness as needed.
Bucknell Plan for Engineering Education (BPEE): This is a flexible strategic plan
that is currently under review and will be updated by October 2003 and will be
updated every two years.
Biomedical Engineering Program: This coming fall (Class of 2007), the first
biomedical engineering majors will enter Bucknell. Two faculty positions have
been filled. ABET Accreditation hopefully will be in place by 2009.
Admissions & Enrollments: Overall target remains at 175 for entering 1st year
students (same since 1996). Last couple of years have experienced entering class
numbers at or over 175. Applications continued to increase (9% over last year) to
1450 applications for 175 slots. Acceptance rate has decreased from 65.4% in
1999 to 43.8% in 2003, which is very favorable. Enrollment at the College is
currently 638, which is much improved from 702 four years ago. Combined SAT
average has increased from 1306 in 2000 to 1319 in 2002.
Faculty Staffing: The College has enacted a plan to balance the number of faculty
on leave in any one year. Also, 3 tenure-track positions were approved to replace





Handouts of the slide presentation were provided to the board. The presentation
provided an overview on what the new Bucknell biomedical engineering program
is about and the biomedical engineering industry in general.
Bucknell’s new program will be one of 55 BME programs offering a BS degree in
the United States. Only 2 programs offer a BS degree at a non-Ph.D. institution.
Eventually, three specializations will be offered at Bucknell: Biotransport
(starting Fall 2003), Biomechanics/Biomaterials (TBA), and
Bioinstrumentation/Bioimaging (TBA).
The BME Major with Biotransport specialization will begin with 15 students per
year with a total of 60 students total. Most, if not all, will need to apply directly
for the program. Transfers from other majors will be difficult given projected
demand. 15 students can take the BME Minor.
The BEAA board could be a resource to provide professional
contacts/resources to support BME senior design projects when they first
start in 2006.
For the incoming class of 2007, 90 individuals applied and 31 received offers (17
female/14 male). SAT scores are generally above 1400 – very high caliber
applicants. 8 individuals have sent in deposits to date. Projected fall 2003
transfers into the BME program are approximately 10.
BME Highlights in Review
o Biotransport specialization major will start in Fall 2003
o Fundamental engineering with integration of life sciences
o Small, interactive, hands-on program with ~15 students per year
o Students prepared for grad/med school and industry
o BME minor open to all engineering students
o 2 full time faculty, 2 one-third time, and 6 affiliated faculty
