COMPLETE SYLLABUS WILL BE GIVEN ON THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS.
Course Description
This course covers advanced grammar structures and paragraph development. Emphasis is

 Competence in selection from among organizational strategies that suit the varied
purpose of typical academic writing tasks, especially under time pressure.
 Increase sentence complexity and variety, including the use of advanced structures and
more sophisticated transitions.
 The ability to edit their own written work independently, especially with respect to
common ESL writing problems.
Books/Materials
1. Introduction to Academic Writing, third edition, by Alice Oshima and Ann Hogue
2. Understanding and Using English Grammar by Betty Azar
Attendance/Lateness
Regular attendance is a required. If you have more than 3 absences, your grade may be
lowered. If you are absent, you are still required to complete the work and come to class
prepared. There are no make-up assignments for absences. For serious illness, contact me as
soon as possible and bring medical documentation. Being more than 10 minutes late on a
regular basis will also count as an absence each time
Homework
Homework will be given throughout the semester. This work is meant to help you and to help
the class go smoothly. If you do not do the homework, you are losing out on an opportunity to
improve your English. In addition, you will be slowing down the amount of work that can be
done during class time. Please be considerate of others, and do your homework.
Exit Paragraphs
These paragraphs are the equivalent of final exams and will be written in the classroom with no
outside preparation. They must be single paragraphs of about 200 words in length which will be
graded by two teachers. No topics will be given in advance. You can not get help from anyone
in preparing these paragraphs, nor may you use a paragraph that you or someone else has
written for another class or teacher. You must pass 3 exit paragraphs in order to pass the class.
There will be no final exam, so we will schedule the final exit paragraph for that time. There are
no make-up exit paragraphs.
Grading
Your final grade will be based on your performance on the exit paragraphs. There are variables
that can affect your final grade, such as lateness, failure to do all the assigned work, failure to
complete all in-class assignments, more than 3 absences, or suspicion of cheating. Failure to
achieve a total of at least 3 passing paragraphs will result in a D grade. You can not advance to
English 101 with any lower than a C grade. A final grade of F is reserved for those who have
plagiarized or cheated in any other way and for those who have stopped attending without
officially withdrawing. Final grades will be posted on the internet as soon as possible. If you can
not access this information, you may give me a stamped, self-addressed envelope and I will mail
you the results. I will not give out information on the phone or by e-mail.
Withdrawal
Failure to attend class is not an official withdrawal and will probably result in the assignment of
an F grade. Please see the MCCC handbook for more information. Keep in mind that withdrawal
from any class may affect your visa status.
Code of Conduct
Please turn off your cell phone during class time unless there is an emergency. Please follow all
the conduct rules as stated in the MCCC handbook.
Academic Honesty
All forms of cheating, including plagiarism, will be dealt with according to official MCCC policy. If
you are in doubt, please ask. You may not hand in previously written paragraphs as new, nor
may you get help on your written work.
