PURPOSE: Responsible for performing duties requiring advanced operational skills and/or
technical skills, substantial knowledge of general library services with expertise in a particular
area of responsibility.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for recommending and interpreting existing
procedures and practices in an area of specialization or assigned unit within a department.
Attends meetings; gathers and compiles data; and writes reports for distribution and/or
presentations for administrative, instructional and informational purposes. Represents the unit
through effective discussion and oral and written presentation; contributes to planning and the
establishment of policies and procedures. Acts as a project manager or supervisor for a unit or
special library project that includes establishing routines, priorities and workflow, verifying
work, and supervising other staff. Interviews, hires and evaluates support staff for the unit within
the Library's and University's policies and procedures. Trains staff in the use of the Library's
integrated library system and subsystems; and counsels, coaches, and teaches support staff using
effective communication skills. Disseminates accurate information in a clear and courteous
manner to inform users of Library and University policies and procedures through direct
interaction with users. Assess users research needs, provides instruction to enable Library
clientele to use the online catalog and other online library tools for locating materials and
information, including complex searching and using extensive knowledge of the library
collection. Acts as a supervisor within a small unit and trains student assistants or volunteers in
the physical processing of library materials to include books, videos, music CD's and maps.
Interviews hires and trains student workers and or LA II's. Also, responsible for performance
appraisals and discharges, if necessary. Receives, initiates processing, and catalogs federal and
state documents in support of the Library's participation in government depository programs.
Communicates with faculty, staff, students and other departments and institutions to provide
interpretation of policies or to resolve complex billing problems or other issues for the unit.
Interacts regularly with faculty, staff, students, other university departments, external agencies,
institutions, and companies in the formal acquisition and dissemination of information including
official statistical data, formal surveys, academic program reports, etc.; the compilation of a wide
variety of data from other institutions and vendors such as sales proposals and licensing
requirements; the creation and management of internal and vendor relational databases; the
resolution of complex vendor issues such as EDI, receipts, and payments; and in response to a
wide variety of patron information needs. Performs complex bibliographic searching to locate
materials needed by Library users, whether available in the Library or at another institution and
to ensure the correctness of citations for materials ordered by the Library. Prepares and handles
complex orders, receipts, and problems with serials, CD's, maps, videos, periodical
subscriptions, or monographs. Performs complex cataloging for monographs and serials.
Searches the OCLC database and selects appropriate records; enters, augments, and corrects
records in the Library's online catalog; makes certain that data meets system requirements, UT
Arlington procedures, and national standards; and carries out authority control activities.
Supervises the ordering, check-in, claiming, paying, and maintaining of historical cost
information to serial publications.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
REPORTS TO: General supervision from a Librarian, Archivist, or Library Assistant IV
with special instructions on new or complex procedures. Generally, the position has
decision making authority within the limits of routines and their applications.
SUPERVISION: N/A
SUPERVISION-OTHER: May supervise Library Assistant I's, II's and/or student
assistants. Generally, is responsible for training in their specific area of responsibility.
REQUIRED EDUCATION: $education
REQUIRED EDUCATION-OTHER: High School graduation or GED.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE / COMPETENCIES-OTHER:
REQUIRED EXPERIENCES/COMPETENCIES: Five years related experience, two
years of which must be at least at the Library Assistant II level. Sixty credit hours of
college substitutes for one year of experience; a Bachelor's degree substitutes for two
years of required experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree. 3 years of general work
experience in a library environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS-OTHER: Specific job requirements or physical
location of some positions allocated to this classification may render the position security
sensitive, and thereby subject to the provisions of section 51.215 Texas Education Code.
INTERNAL CONTROL: Within the scope of position duties, responsible for seeing that
operations are effective and efficient, assets are safeguarded, reliable financial data is
maintained, and applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures are followed.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Light typing is required. Accuracy in spelling, filing, entering facts
and figures, giving verbal information, operating machines and systematizing of records.
Accuracy in all phases of library work. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills. Ability to interact in a professional manner with
faculty, staff, students and the public. Strong customer service skills. Some weekend and/or
evening hours.
