Academic Advisor I Job Description TITLE: Academic Advisor I JOB CODE: 3087 EFFECTIVE DATE: FLSA STATUS: NE EEO6 CODE: 3 = Professional/Non-faculty PURPOSE: To participate in the planning and conveyance of academic advising/counseling services and programs that promote comprehensive educational opportunities for all students. Cooperates with faculty by providing quality assistance for all academic advising needs of individuals or groups of students. Responsible for understanding and interpreting the requirements and academic options available to students and assist pursuit in their area of interest. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Advise students individually and in groups about the development of educational options and the resources available. Works closely with other academic advisors and counselors in order to provide timely information on course/degree options and University policies. Make appropriate referrals. Performs related duties as required. Monitor retention programs and make appropriate reports. Assist in registration, verify student prerequisite and requirements. Participation in professional conferences and individual professional development will be required. May need to train students or staff who are involved in academic advising. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: REPORTS TO: General instruction and evaluation from supervisor. SUPERVISION: N/A SUPERVISION-OTHER: Some instruction will need to be conveyed to support staff and clerical personnel. REQUIRED EDUCATION: $education REQUIRED EDUCATION-OTHER: Bachelor's degree in related field. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE / COMPETENCIES-OTHER: REQUIRED EXPERIENCES/COMPETENCIES: One to four years experience working with college students or adolescents in an academic counseling capacity. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Personal computers and related equipment. Accuracy in evaluating and articulating information on students to faculty and administrators and in interpreting institutional rules and regulations and other information. Will include usual office conditions with some evening and weekend work. Involvement in professional development activities and participation in student affairs which include travel.  Tact will be required along with, diplomacy and judgment in dealing with students, faculty and administrators. Excellent customer service skills are desired. Specific job requirements or physical location of positions allocated to this classification render the position security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas Education Code.
