TITLE: Slide Librarian

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY: Manages the organization, planning,
maintenance and coordination of all slide library activities. Responsible for slide and video
acquisitions, copy photography, slide processing, cataloging, reference services, collection
policies/procedures, digital image initiatives and budget management. Staff duties include
recruitment, training, supervision and evaluation of work-study and part-time student assistants.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
o
Directs and oversees all aspects of the slide library;
o
Formulates and carries out aims and objectives, including communicating with
administrators, faculty and other users, to integrate the needs of the Department into an
overall program for the slide library;
o
Initiates and determines policies/procedures based on departmental aims and objectives;
manages acquisitions and circulation of the collection materials and equipment; maintains
records and statistics;
o
Develops the collections through purchases, in-house production, and donations; works
closely with the faculty to develop course resources; develops and maintains reference
materials and authority resources;
o
Implements new technologies, including the expanding use of digital images and the
development, evaluation and maintenance of a comprehensive database, as well as online web image reviews for students;
o
Facilitates access to the collections through classification, cataloging and indexing;
maintains classification and cataloging manual for the collection;
o
Hires, trains and supervises student assistants;
o
Assesses and monitors preservation needs, including developing plans and
recommendations for reformatting, security needs and preservation strategies;
o
Oversees copyright policy management, requesting permission as needed, and
negotiating license agreements for digital media;
o
Prepares annual budgetary plan; monitors expenses for budgeted funds; purchases
supplies and equipment; maintains equipment and repair/replacement needs;
o
Conducts orientation sessions for users; supervises use of projection and video
equipment; oversees lecture room and equipment schedules;
o
Performs other duties as assigned.
INTERNAL CONTROL:
Responsible for the design, execution, and effectiveness of a system of internal controls which
provides reasonable assurance that department operations are effective and efficient, department
assets are safeguarded, department financial information is reliable, and the department complies
with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. BA in Art History, MA in Art History preferred
2. Minimum 4 years experience in management of a visual resource collection required
3. Competency in an electronic environment, especially digital image technologies and
collection management systems
4. Knowledge of copy photography, archival practices and copyright issues
5. Demonstrated administrative and management skills required
6. Excellent organizational skills and strong interpersonal skills necessary
7. Reading knowledge of at least one European language
