Leadership Development Series for Supervisors
Supervision is a key factor to the success of any organization. To support those at Viterbo with supervisory responsibilities, human resources is offering a year-long
training comprised of seven different sessions designed to enhance leadership and the management of direct reports. This series will be offered in a small group format
designed to promote discussion and interaction between participants. The fall sessions will be three hours and the spring sessions will be two hours. Each session will
remain on the same date/time of the month. (e.g. 2nd Friday or the month, 8:00am) Date and time to be determined by participants in the series. The series is designed
for current supervisors, and participation in all sessions is required to participate in the series.

Training Objectives
Understand your preferred style of thinking and
communication using the Herrmann Brain
Dominance Instrument (HBDI) and use this selfawareness to strengthen your relationships. This
session will be the basis for all sessions going
forward.
Understand the differences between directing,
coaching, supporting and delegating employees.
Gain tools to create open communication and
develop self-reliance in those they manage.
Discover the different ways to handle conflict
using the Thomas-Kilman Conflict Mode
Instrument (TKI) and how this affects
performance. Understand the model to have
healthy conversations with teams and other
departments.
With a better understanding of communication,
leadership and conflict management in the three
previous sessions, we will discuss how these
tools will serve the internal customer and
students.
Employment Law – Understanding the acronyms
of FMLA, FLSA, ACA and ADA and how this
effects the supervisor relationship.
Understand the importance of delivering
performance feedback (not just at annual
evaluations), establishing SMART goals and
completing Viterbo’s performance evaluations
with employees.
Opportunity for cohort to bring topics to discuss
and resolve as a group. Understand that
supervisor issues are universal and everyone
has dealt with issues in different capacities.

Leadership Development Series Application
The first year will be limited to eleven participants and will be only offered to those who manage one or more employees (non-work study). No supervisors of the current
participants will be in the sessions together.
