IHL Team Leader

International Humanitarian Law (IHL) is the body of law that places basic limits on how war is waged. It seeks to limit the destruction caused by war and protect the life and human dignity of those out of combat, such as civilians or wounded soldiers.

Position Title: IHL Action Campaign* Team Leader (Can be considered for academic credit)

Purpose: IHL Team Leaders will work in pairs to facilitate hands-on, experiential activities among a small group of youth between the ages of 13 and 18 years old. The IHL Action Campaign Program is a national American Red Cross initiative that has three goals: to increase young people’s knowledge of

International Humanitarian Law, to influence young people’s attitudes, and to inspire them to take action and design their own IHL Action Campaigns. The aim is to teach youth that “Even Wars Have Limits” and to develop them into critical thinkers, problem solvers, and compassionate global citizens

Key Responsibilities, in partnership with a Co-Leader:

Attend IHL Team Leader Training: January 16, 17 in Cincinnati, Ohio (all expenses paid)

Participate in the IHL Action Campaign Trial-run, 1-day workshop, Date/Location TBD

Implement the IHL Action Campaign during Spring semester

Facilitate IHL simulation activities and debriefing sessions

Guide Team members as they research and design an original IHL Action Campaign

Handle the logistics and coordination of team meetings and supplies

Commit to success! – Compete nationally against other Teams to have your Campaign selected for the National IHL Youth Symposium at American Red Cross National Headquarters in

Washington DC, June, 2014 (all expenses paid)

Qualifications:

-

Between 18 – 25 years old

Passionate about international issues and international humanitarian law

Possess a strong desire to guide and mentor youth in community education

-

Strong public speaking skills and a desire to learn about Experiential Learning

-

Organized, professional, creative and resourceful

Flexible schedule

Length of Appointment: Spring Semester (4 days of training and implementation)

Time Commitment: up to 60 hours (to be broken up by weekly sessions and/or 1-day workshops)

Development Opportunities: Training and facilitation, grassroots community organizing, enhance public speaking skills

*The IHL Action Campaign is a hands-on, interactive initiative that exposes youth and young adults to the Rules of

War or International Humanitarian Law (IHL).
