ENHANCING THE DELIVERY of English as a Second Language Raquel Bento EMPACTS Independent Study Fall 2008 Introduction This project has as an objective to show the results of my experience as a teaching assistant in English as a Second Language-ESL classes as well as the benefits to the community. ESL Adult Education Project Overview This presentation is a summary of my activities with Advanced ESL classes. I will explain how this experience improved my teaching abilities and which benefits it brought to the community. Project Objectives To develop strategies for enhancing the delivery of ESL to adults. Community Aspects Conversation class To support the NWACC community by assisting the ESL program by… encouraging students to further their educational experiences helping model activities tutoring students with problems monitoring pair and group activities preparing materials teaching class during the teacher’s absence Course Objectives To learn about the methods for teaching ESL to adults critical thinking presentation lesson planning evaluation diagnostics teaching approaches methodology activities and tasks ESL faculty and students socialize and practice their language skills Technology Power Point Windows Media Player, Microsoft Movie Maker Graphic Design Software Overhead projector TV/DVD/Video/Tape Players Language CDs Internet Language Sites Skills Language communication skills instructional language explanatory language Teaching multicultural awareness and respect text and resource capabilities Technology for the classroom Computer use and accessing websites Methods The skills mentioned were accomplished through participation in training such as the Arkansas Department of Workforce Education’s ESl Institute and completing a South Caroline College Pilot Project for teaching ESL on-line. planning lessons and designing activities participating in the class routine 4 to 8 hours weekly. Me Expected Outcome My experience has prepared me to teach English as a Foreign when I return to Brazil.
