Re: Montgomery County Fair Queen Contest Dear Contestant, Thank you for your interest in the 2013 Montgomery County Fair Queen Contest. The fair queen is an important part of the fair, as she is visible throughout the week of the fair, attends fair events, hands out ribbons, has numerous photo opportunities and represents Montgomery County at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines in August. The Montgomery County Fair Queen judging will be on Tuesday, July 9th at 6:30 p.m. at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Conference Room (lower level) in Red Oak. The crowning is Tuesday, July 16 at 7:30 pm at the fairgrounds auditorium. Candidates must be in attendance at the July 9 judging and the July 16 crowning. The judging begins with introduction of sponsors and candidates with light refreshments being served, followed by individual interviews. Candidates should be dressed semi-casual (sundress, pant suit) for the introductions. Each candidate is sponsored by a local organization or business. The sponsor will pay the candidate’s $15 entry/sponsor fee and, if selected as the fair queen, the candidate’s sponsor may choose to help with expenses while at the Iowa State Fair. Candidates may choose to get their own sponsor, if you need assistance contact Dawn LeRette at 623-2525. Sponsors and parents are welcome and encouraged to accompany candidates to the introductions at 6:30 p.m. The judging process is a lengthy one. Sponsors and parents are welcome, but not required, to stay for the entire interview process and will be allowed to visit with the candidates during breaks. There is an additional $5 per person charge for sponsors/parents who are accompanying the candidate to help defray the costs of the light meal/refreshments being served. Candidates will be interviewed, according to categories listed on the information sheets. Dress for judging will include casual attire and evening gown. Candidates are invited to perform a talent or display a hobby; however, no extra points will be awarded. If you choose to perform a talent, indicate this on your entry form, including the type of talent. Each candidate is expected to attend the Montgomery County Fair and perform county fair duties; i.e., present ribbons and trophies at various events. The queen and her court will be expected to attend various activities throughout the county during the year. The candidate selected for Montgomery County Queen is eligible to compete for Iowa State Fair Queen. All candidates will receive gifts. Fill out the entry form in its entirety. Please be specific when describing your interests and activities. You must include a head and shoulder picture with your entry. A current school photo would be ideal. The $15 entry fee for the candidate and $5 per additional person must accompany the entry form. Checks should be made payable to the Montgomery County Fairboard. Questions may be directed to Dawn LeRette at 623-2525. We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, July 9th. FAIR GOALS FOR EACH CLUB We would like each club to do the following at the fair this year: 1. To have at least two members per club participate in the Flowers in the Pail activity. 2. There will be questions on the breeding classes. 4-H AND FFA DRESS AT THE AUCTION You are required to have your 4-H or FFA T-shirt on and long pants with tennis shoes or boots. Sandals aren’t acceptable shoes to be worn while showing Livestock or for the Livestock auction. COPYRIGHT—HOW IT AFFECTS 4-H EXHIBITORS There are concerns about how the copyright law is being enforced within the 4-H area. The copyright laws are a concern in all project areas, not only visual arts. The copyright law states that an individual cannot use another’s work (art, photograph, written word, logo, trademark, team insignia, etc.) for their personal use. This means you will not duplicate the item, you will not make money from the item and the item will not be on public display. This last item is the clause we must enforce in the 4-H fair setting. If you plan on using the idea, be sure to secure the appropriate permission from the creator. Even if you change the design always cite the original source. 4-H members should review the following resources. State Fair Exhibit Frequently Asked Questions located at http://ww.extension.iastate.edu/4H/StateFair/SFExhibitFAQGen.htm PROJECTS BEING JUDGED Introduce yourself when you come in and before you sit down. The judge really does want to know your name so try these step to practice. 1. Look at the person you are going to meet and smile. 2. Use a pleasant tone of voice. 3. State your name—“Hello (Hi), my name is ………………………… 4. While saying this, extend your hand and shake the judge’s hand. 5. Following the judge’s greeting telling you his/her name, respond with—It’s nice to meet you. The judge will try to make your sharing about your project as easy as possible by asking you questions that will help you tell about it. You will find that when you are done sharing your project, the judge will share comments on the items that they see that went well as you learned and they may have some comments on new ideas you might try, to learn more about your project or to help you improve in meeting your goals When you are done with your judging session, don’t forget to shake the judge’s hand and thank them for their time.
