LIST OF FINAL YEAR PROJECTS

NOTE:
1. Students will be examined at the end of the Semester in which they are
registered.
2. Students who may have interest in a research area that is not listed may seek
supervision from a member of staff who after discussion will arrive at a suitable
title.
3. ALL Projects must be supervised by an academic member of staff.

Dr. DAVID DOLLY
1. Attitude to Agriculture among selected populations of people in any
Caribbean country.
There are increasing concerns that large percentages of citizenry do not have
appropriate attitudes to agriculture. The study will develop these concerns and
attempt to measure attitudes which are occurring among selected populations of
citizenry. There will be the option to compare attitudes among different age groups,
rural and urban populations, males and females, professionals and non
professionals, different types of consumers etc.
2. Content Analysis of a Family Farm Discussion conducted on line through
FAO.
The Food and Agriculture Organisation recently conducted an online global
discussion on the plight of family farms throughout the world. The study will
conduct a content analysis of this discussion in an effort to understand this plight
and possible resolves to sustain the family farm as an essential element for
agricultural productivity.
3. Views about Organic Farming in any Caribbean Country.
Organic farming is yet to have a main impact in Caribbean agriculture, especially
by comparison to other parts of the world. The study will select sample populations
of citizens and determine their views of organic farming. There will be the option to
compare the views of different age groups, rural and urban populations, males and
females, professionals and non professionals, different types of consumers etc.
4. Extension Officer/Agent Support within a named Caribbean country.
Extension services exist throughout the Caribbean region. There is the persistent
concern that officers /agents do not get the required support to conduct their work.
A counter argument exists that the service is not meeting its advisory and other
objectives and should not obtain any further support. The study will examine the
circumstances, challenges, resolves, constraints etc which affects extension
services and emerge with possible suggestions for the future.
5. A review of the Nairobi Declaration on Extension and Advisory Services.
The CTA and several partner institutions organized a major extension conference
held in Nairobi, Kenya in November 2011. The conference produced a Nairobi

Declaration on Extension and Advisory Services which is expected to guide the
future activities of Extension work especially in the African Caribbean and Pacific
(ACP) countries. The study will review the declaration and find ways to
determine/advocate the usefulness and acceptance of the declaration by leaders of
Extension in a named Caribbean country.
6. Pluralism as a model for Extension work.
Recently there is a new model for Extension and Advisory services which advocates
the role for many different agencies to conduct Extension services within a
community. This is quite different from the traditional state model which has
dominated the Caribbean for a very long time. The study will review the new
concept and develop ways to test its acceptance within the agricultural fraternity
where pluralism would function.
7. Nutrition Extension
Food and nutrition security (FNS) continue to be an important paradigm for
countries within the Caribbean. However many citizens do not know what this
means and how they can contribute to achieving the objectives of FNS. This study
will investigate perceptions of FNS which are held by select populations of persons
within a designated area. The study will inform strategies to extend information
and provide outreach to citizens.
8. Agritourism Extension
Agritourism is a new horizon of industry within the agricultural sectors/ economies
of the Caribbean region. This study will determine the potential of this activity. It
will assess the constraints and opportunities to deliver a suitable agritourism
product and investigate the view of current Extension agents in providing
assistance to this activity.
9. Other
Selected topics of mutual interest between the student and supervisor are possible.
All topics are expected to relate to the subject matter of the following courses:
Island Food Systems, the Operation and Management of Extension Programmes
and Gender Issues in Agriculture.
