Alphabet Challenge: Divide group into two teams and give each group a set of letters, A-Z. I just put the letters on sheets of Recycling paper, one letter per page and only one of each letter which is what makes this game challenging. Lots of words have two or three copies of a letter so teams have to think carefully of an answer with the set of letters that they have. The teams are challenged to come up with the longest word and not to duplicate the other team’s answer as they will cancel each other out. Have groups a little separated and have them put their letters on the floor or table so they can put them in order for using them in their answer. Then have the team members grab the letters needed and put them in order so they can reveal their answer when you see that both teams have come up with an answer. Have them face the other team and turn their letters over to show their answer when you call on them. They can keep track of which team won each round….but it is just for fun so probably downplay the competitive drive. Hopefully they will be surprised and encouraged by the winning answer…like, “I wish we had thought of that.” This activity is to get them used to working together as team members.
