This itinerary is based on Stacia and Wyatt Biel's trip in August 2006. We will visit two
of Canada’s premier national parks: Banff National Park in Alberta and Yoho National
Park in adjacent British Colombia. Designated as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO,
this area houses awe-inspiring mountains, abundant, accessible glaciers, copious and
diverse flora and fauna, making it a backcountry paradise.
SAT: Arrive Calgary in early afternoon; stop at local grocery store to buy lunch items;
drive to Banff
SUN: Option to do local hikes in Banff (Johnston Canyon, Bow Glacier Falls or Tunnel
Mountain) or do longer hike to Healy Pass; option to visit Banff Hot Springs in the
evening after dinner.
MON: Hike Edith and Corey Passes; option to visit Banff Hot Springs.
TUE: Early departure towards Lake Louise via Bow Valley Parkway; hike Moraine
Lake and Sentinel Pass.

We will stay at the Banff and Lake Louise Hostels
A mix of restaurants and grocery bought food. Breakfasts and dinners will be included in
the price, lunches will be bought on own when we go to the grocery stores. Banff has no
lack of restaurants. Melissa's in town for breakfast. Dinners will be a mix of all together
and smaller groups. There will be a welcome dinner the second night at the Banff
Springs Hotel in Banff . Lake Louise has far less to offer for meals and a bit harder with
a larger group. We'll arrange for some group dinners at the Lake Louise Hostel and the
Peyto Cafe.
Grocery Stores: Both towns have them, although the Safeway in Banff is far bigger than
the small grocery store in Lake Louise. However, both offer plenty of options for lunches
(make own trail lunches) and the hostels have fridges and kitchens to prepare the food.
We'll buy the group sandwich bags, saran wrap, etc for everyone to use. The hostels also
offer bagged lunches, but they are expensive.
We will fly into Calgary International Airport. On our last day we will be in Lake
Louise, which is a two-hour drive from the airport.
We will rent two mini vans, and a car. The two leaders will be the primary drivers of the
mini-vans, we will need a participant to be the primary driver of the third vehicle.

If yes, please describe below what you will do:
A pre-trip hike will be planned in a central location.
We are reading about the history of the discovery and exploration of this part of the
Canadian Rockies and some of the early AMC mountaineers like Abbott and Fay who
have peaks and huts named for them. We are learning about the efforts to preserve
wildlife and maintain the ecological balance via controlled forest burns, and fences to
protect wildlife from vehicular traffic.. We are also learning about identifying numerous
trees, plants and animals along the trails, finding some that were the same as in New
England and some that were different. We can also attend a Ranger presentation. We
also may contact a local organization to see if a representative would be willing to talk to
our group.
