Certification level I from Canada Avalanche Assoc. and level III from American
Avalanche Institute.
Regarding avalanche risk, we charter a snow coach for a morning ski in the Canyon and
an afternoon ski in the Washburn Hills area. We ski on a snow covered road to a high
pass, roughly 2 miles, and return the same way. Those with desire and skills can ski
back with intermittent stops on steep slopes for tele skiing. The road is bordered at
points by steep slopes on the upper side of the road and lower angle on the lower side.
At the beginning of the road, in between the AM and PM portions of this day, the group
eats lunch in the snow coach. I have gone ahead to do snow pack analysis. The major
pit dug is surface to ground; 2-3 stability tests are carried out. In addition I have
reviewed the most recent avalanche bulletins, from the local avalanche center regarding
the Gallatin and Washburn ranges, obtained information on recent ski trips in the area
from Xanterra [facilities management] ski shop personnel, consulted with the snow
rangers if they are available, and queried local skiers if they are around. Following my
analysis in the field, combined with this other information, I make a decision regarding
whether or not we will undertake the Washburn portion of the trip. I’ve led the trip for

close to 25 years, and during this time I have called off this portion of the trip, I think, on
two occasions; both times were due to my judgment call regarding snow pack stability
and recent snowfall.
I carry equipment pertaining to this aspect of the trip. We carry shovels, and I have a
snow saw and probe [for penetration analysis]. Group participants do not have shovels,
probes, or beacons, nor are they appropriately trained in the use of such [such training
should require sustained, regular, and detailed practice].
