The trip will consist of day tours of ~ 8 miles per day in and around the Payette National
Forest in Central Idaho. We will be based in McCall, Idaho
Best Western Plus McCall Lodge, typical hotel with 2 beds per room
Breakfasts and dinners will be provided as part of the trip. Particpants are responsible
for trail lunches

While skiing will be the primary focus of the trip through backcountry tours, we
will explore: the history of skiing in the McCall region; the history of the
development of central Idaho; the history of the native people. We will try to
visit the Central Idaho Historical Museum.

Weather is always a potential factor on winter trips, too much snow, too little snow,
avalanche danger

Change plans; ski more locally; hunker down and revise itinerary. The first step to
minimize analanche hazard is through judicious selection of daily tours, based on
guidebooks and research. Initial avalanche conditions are always assessed each morning
prior to leaving the lodge by checking the Payette Avalanche Center and Weather
website and verified on snow. Too little snow will require travelling farther and higher

Road conditions, drivers, insurance
For ground transportation we will use vans. Potential hazards include snow and ice
covered roads, general road hazards
Drivers will be cautious and careful. We will inquire with rental company about the
advisability of chains.
