Day hiking in Alaska, starting in Anchorage in the Chugash Mountains, then to Denali
NP, Talkeetna, Seward and the Kenai Fjords, returning to Anchorage. We will travel RT
approx 800 miles on this land tour, allowing plenty of travel time and sightseeing and
rest days where participants may choose to do an activity instead of hike. We will hike
up to 10 miles a day at a moderate pace over varied terrain. We will have 19 hours of
daylight to explore in,
We will be staying at comfortable lodging TBD as reservations can not be taken and
rates offered until Fall 2016 in the places we are interested in Princess Lodges. Other
places require payment in full first night and we can not do this until the trip fills. We
have picked 3 stars or better for places to stay including lodges, hotels, and cabins 2
people per room in 2 beds each. All places researched are asking $200+ per night. We
will continue to research once rates become available.
Dinners are included at $35 pp budget, lunches and breakfasts are excluded. Although
we will eat together on the trail or road, we find that people prefer to get snacks for their
lunches and opt out of breakfast so we left the group meals out, also helps reduce the
budget. We will look for places that offer breakfast with the lodging.

We will rent 3 mini-vans or SUV's that hold 5-6 passengers. Costs are over $4000. Gas
is approximately $2/gallon. We will need drivers for the third vehicle and as alternates.
Our drive time is not extensive as we planned around this carefully with minimum time
traveling. The longest day traveling is about 4 hours and we will break it up with a hike.

We will apply for a CAU permit through the national parks. Leaders were both
Yellowstone Guides through the NPS via the permit process. There is also a permit for
the state park we will apply for. If we get denied, plan B will be to hike in state parks
and/or go on guided park hikes. The permits are approximately $350 so we will not
apply until the trip is full.

Participants should be able to hike at the pace of the slowest hiker. We plan to go at a
moderate pace of 1.5 miles/hour and will go slow on any ascents. We expect all
participants to hike in a group at all times and follow the park service rules of refraining
from wildlife encounters or hiking solo, and following LNT principles. Participants
should be in good to excellent shape at the time of departure. We will hike up to 10
miles a day and have little darkness to worry about.

The AMC mission is followed in numerous ways from visiting National Parks
and seeing the wildlife and how they preserve these parks for marine and land
animals. Participants will learn about bear and wildlife safety from their
leadership educating them about the park service, and the geology of Denali. We
will be recreating in a vast wilderness, serving as the naturalists, and they will
have opportunities to meet with the park service rangers, and take optional
narrated tours in the Kenai Fjords and Denali Bus ride.

From Prospectus: You must be able to hike an average of 8-10 miles per day at a
moderate pace easily, with moderate elevation gains (3000-5000 feet), while carrying
enough equipment to keep you safe in the event of bad weather or injury. You should be
in moderate to excellent physical condition at the time we depart. This trip is not for
people who have not hiked mountains for several years. By you agreeing to this
contract, you are stating you are mentally and physically capable of hiking ~75+ miles
over the course of the trip. We will discuss any concerns over the phone, and your
abilities. Please do not take offense to our questions and be accurate with your abilities
for the safety of all. We would expect participants to be flexible to hike at the pace of the
slowest hiker. Rest days are understandable.
