Accommodations Please describe your plans for accommodation(s) Meals: Please describe your Form Revised September 2015 This will be a new way of exploring Provence. We have both led a previous trip to Provence but as a road only from city to city and hotel to hotel. We have led one bike boat trip in the Po River Valley ending in Venice. We will suggest participants fly into Paris and take the direct train from CDG Airport to Marseille. This appears a much cheaper option than flying to Marseille directly. We will start with the first day and night in Marseille with an exploration of this interesting city. We will then transfer to Aigues Mortes and board our boat which will be our accommodations for the duration of the trip. The trip ends in Avignon, and participants who have flown into Paris and taken the train will take the train from Avignon to CDG Airport. Those who have flown into Marseille will take the train to the Marseille Airport. Please see the prospectus for a full description of the day to day locations, rides, length of rides, etc. one night in a hotel in Marseille; the remainder on board the boat All meals will be provided while biking. Vouchers will be given for the other meals. Adventure Travel Trip Proposal Form, page 2 of 6 Provence: Bike/Boat "La Provence Magnifique" plans for providing meals. TOUR OPERATOR AND GUIDE SERVICE INFORMATION This section should be completed if the trip will be using a tour operator, outfitter, guide service, travel agency or other such company or person(s) for a significant part of the trip or for the entire trip. Any person(s) or companies that are handling a significant portion of trip funds or arrangements need to be vetted. If there is more than one tour operator please provide this information about each such entity. Will this trip require a tour Yes No operator or guide service Please describe their services. If you are using a tour operator for the entire trip, during part of or for the please describe why you will be using them rather than doing this trip on your own: This trip is supported, days 2-10, by a bike touring company based in Italy. They will entire trip? provide the chartered boat with the staff to operate it, breakfasts and dinners, bikes, routes and routesheets/maps, and a professional on-bike guide who will accompany us on all cycling legs. They will also sub-contract a city-guide for a tour of Arles. In addition, they schedule visits to special sites like the winery in Baux-en-Provence. The itinerary from the time we board to the time we disembark the boat is exactly the same as can be found on the company's website. The itinerary is not flexible as it is tied to the course and navigation of the river and the availability of mooring space. 2 AMC leaders will accompany the trip. As we are chartering the entire boat, we are able to increase the maximum number of participants to 16 (+the 2 leaders) to help spread costs more than the usual 7:1 ratio. We do not plan to increase the trip size beyond 16 participants, as we believe the "small Form Revised September 2015 Adventure Travel Trip Proposal Form, page 3 of 6 Dick Cable/Janis Stahlhut Provence: Bike/Boat "La Provence Magnifique" group" feel of a larger group, as well as the logistics of shepherding a larger group reasonable proximity throughout each ride is too likely to become unwieldy, compromising the experience of the entire group. With 14-18 participants, 2 leaders in addition to the guide are needed to provide mid-group and sweep functions so that the group can as much as possible operate as one group, each participant benefiting from the highlights of each day's rides, along with the insights and talks given along the way by the guide. Our guide will speak both English and French. We are less than one to two hours to medical services of hospital status. RISK ASSESSMENT Please assess the risks and hazards of your trip. Carefully consider each area of risk and how it may affect your trip. Devise a plan to prevent each hazard and to respond to it if it becomes necessary. Please be very specific for each section if applicable. Trail conditions, river crossings, weather, wildlife (bears, snakes, etc.) Climate/terrain Potential hazards The usual hazards of biking will exist. Response Use of proper foot gear, helmets, and biking protocol Political concerns, crime, language translation, terrorism Foreign Country Potential hazards petty theft can occur in most countries. Response remind participants to be aware of safe practices Road conditions, drivers, insurance Transportation Potential hazards We will not be driving. Response Level of fitness, screening concerns, experience with equipment or activity Participants Potential hazards Appropriate level of fitness and bike-skills for day road biking and the distances and terrain described in the prospectus. Response Form Revised September 2015 Though attempts are made to weed out those who are clearly under or over qualified, we recognize through our years of experience leading bike trips that screening can never be 100% accurate. As such, we have learned to manage group in accordance with a wide range of individual skills. Our general rule of thumb is “the group is only as fast as its slowest rider.” However, we know that this is not always practical in application. The nature of bike & boat does allow us to offer weaker or less fit rides a “day off” to ride to the next destination onboard with a good book. As we have 2 AMC leaders in addition to the tour leader, we are able to at all times provide a sweep. More aggressive riders present as big a problem. Leaders are experienced in communicating to the group that ALL riders MUST let us know if they will be breaking away (or dropping behind), be equipped with appropriate communications devices (cell phones with activated nternational coverage), communicate with leaders as appropriate, and understand that they may miss a good deal of the tour leader’s along the route education.
