Executive summary
Please provide a brief
description of the trip and the
activities planned.
The trip will focus on hiking and snorkeling on the beautiful and topographically diverse
islands of Maui and Kauai. The group will stay in comfortable condos fully equipped
with kitchens, where we will prepare all meals. Leaders will shop for groceries with
rotating assistance of participants. Participants will prepare own breakfasts and trail
lunches while each condo will take turns preparing dinner for the rest of the group. All
meals are included with the exception of dinner on departure day which will likely be
eaten on the fly in the airport. We will drive to trail heads and beaches in rented vans
while leaders provide commentary on history, flora and fauna of Hawaii. We plan at
least a short hike each day along with scenic stops and time for swimming or snorkeling.
Instruction in snorkeling will be provided by leaders

Hawaii offers many educational opportunities since its geology, botany and marine
biology are unique. We will experience the very formation of the islands as our hikes
will take us from the crater of a 10,000 ft dormant volcano to dramatic coastal lava
cliffs, black sand beaches and underwater wonders. The diversity of climatic zones will
include the arid south coast of Maui and the lush rain forests of Kauai. We will learn
about the human history of Hawaii with visits to ancient ruins and the still thriving
historic village of Lahaina.
The trip may include opportunities to observe efforts to save the Hawaiin state bird,
green sea turtles, monk seals and native species of plants.
The main recreational activities will be hiking 3-8 miles per day and snorkeling, on
beaches near our lodging and at other outstanding locations. In addition, participants
may undertake, at their own expense, helicopter or zodiac boat rides, sea kayaking and
guided snorkel trips.
