Is this proposal for a small group trip – i.e., less than 14 participants and 2
leaders or 7 participants and 1 leader? Yes
No
If yes, why is a small group proposed? Haleakala NP only allows a max of 12
persons in the backcountry and only 12 bunk spaces in the bc huts. Kalalau trail is
technical and dangerous in parts. Having 2 smaller groups so there is not bunching up
on the cliffs will make it safer.
If a participant fee increase of more than 15% is proposed, please explain
why? See above. Park regulations and safety issues.

Executive summary
Please provide a brief
description of the trip and the
activities planned.
Our trip will explore three islands in Hawaii. We will spend the most amount of time on
the first island, Kauai, taking our time to relax and get into the Hawaiian style of life,
dayhiking for two days before venturing on our 3 day backpack on the Kalalau Trail.
We will take some time to explore the beautiful beaches and our last night we will got to
a luau. We will then go to The Big Island (Hawaii) where our primary interest will be
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. We will dayhike for two half-days and our final
evening we will be take a guided tour and observatory view of Mauna Kea, the highest
mountain in the Pacific. Our final island will be Maui. There we will enjoy the pristine
beaches and then travel on the Road to Hana with its winding turns, waterfalls and
beautiful scenery. We will finish with a trip to the crater of Haleakala National Park and
stay in one of the CCC built (1930s) backcountry huts. Our final evening we will enjoy a
dinner cruise in Maui.
The trip will offer a variety of accommodations ranging from average 3-star hotels (5
nights), Bed and Breakfast (2 nights), YMCA bunkhouses (3 nights), National Park
backcountry hut (1 night), car camping (1 night) and backpack tent camping (3 nights).
We will also enjoy a variety of meal options. Trip participants will be expected to plan
and pay for all of their lunches during the trip. We will include stops at grocery stores
for participants to purchase lunch items throughout the trip. While backpacking and
camping, breakfasts and camp dinners will be planned and prepared as group meals.
There will be about 3 or 4 dinners that will be on their own. 3 special dinners are
included (luau, observatory dinner and dinner cruise)

If yes, please describe below what you will need to do to obtain them:
The only special permissions are the summit of Mauna Kea which requies an outfitter.
We will use Mauna Kea Summit Adventures as our outfitter for this excursion. Regular
entrance fees are required for the two national parks and a reservation must be made 90
days in advance (no earlier) for the backcountry hut.
If no, please describe the process you went through to find out that they were not
required:
NPS websites provide details about group permit requirements and there are none.

If yes, please describe below what you will do:
We will offer two pre-trip backpack weekends. One will be offered in late summer and
one in the fall. The trip co-leader will plan and conduct the summer trip and the trip
leader will plan and conduct the fall trip (and return to the East coast). This will allow
trip participants flexibility for their schedules and also allow ample time to prepare and
get to know their fellow trip mates and even tentmates.
Although a part of the United States, Hawaii has an enormous amount of different Asian
and Pacific Island culture which is very different than what most of us are used to. We
will experience this lifestyle and culture through food, their traditional luau and through
interactions with the locals. We will also visit two of America's National Parks. Each
national park in the NPS system offers unique history, wildlife and special features
(lava!) not found in other places. We will explore the visitor centers at the national parks
to learn more about the ecosystem and what makes it special. We will pay special
attention to leave no trace principles for these parks. We will have an interpreted
evening when we visit Mauna Kea that we will learn from experts about this special
volcanic area.

RISK ASSESSMENT
Please assess the risks and hazards of your trip. Carefully consider each area of risk and how it may affect your trip.
Devise a plan to prevent each hazard and to respond to it if it becomes necessary. Please be very specific for each section
if applicable.
Trail conditions, river crossings, weather, wildlife (bears, snakes, etc.)
Climate/terrain
Potential hazards
Strenuous trails, bad weather, muddy trails, steep cliffs, high water
Response
Emphasize pre-trip conditioning and preparation. Offer participants a pre-trip hiking
option. Monitor local weather conditions and forecasts each day.Exercise common sense
and caution when near steep drop-offs. Change trip itinerary if needed.
Political concerns, crime, language translation, terrorism
Foreign Country
Potential hazards
Based on research and recommendations, there is some concern (based on previous
break-ins) about leaving cars and valuables at trailheads--in particular the Kalalau
trailhead.
Response
We plan to stay at the YMCA bunkhouse which is 2 miles from the trailhead the night
before. We will plan to leave the cars with any personal items at the YMCA and will
transport people and backpacking gear (only) by vehicles that we will return to the
YMCA for parking. We will just one car with nothing in it and unlocked at the trailhead.
Road conditions, drivers, insurance
Transportation
Potential hazards
windy mountain roads
Response
Minivans will be rented. Volunteer participant drivers will be needed in addition to the
two leaders (2 or 3 cars total). Tour drivers will be used on Kauai drive to Mauna Kea
summit. We will call ahead to make sure the Road to Hana is open and not dangerous
for travellers.
Level of fitness, screening concerns, experience with equipment or activity
Participants
Potential hazards
Insufficiant experience with backpacking or hiking in muddy/difficult/exposed
conditions.
Response
Potential participants will be screened by phone and a questionaire designed to ensure
they have sufficient hiking experience and gear to participate in and enjoy this trip, as
well as proper expectations for a group trip. Prospectus will indicate that weather can
change the proposed hiking destinations.
Conditions unique to this type of trip
