Yes Executive summary Please provide a brief description of the trip and the activities planned. Our trip will explore three islands in Hawaii. We will spend the most amount of time on the first island, Kauai, taking our time to relax and get into the Hawaiian style of life, dayhiking for two days before venturing on our 3 day backpack on the Kalalau Trail. We will take some time to explore the beautiful beaches and our last night we will got to a luau. We will then go to The Big Island (Hawaii) where our primary interest will be Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. We will dayhike for two half-days and our final evening we will be take a guided tour and observatory view of Mauna Kea, the highest mountain in the Pacific. Our final island will be Maui. There we will enjoy the pristine beaches and then travel on the Road to Hana with its winding turns, waterfalls and beautiful scenery. We will finish with a trip to the crater of Haleakala National Park and stay in one of the CCC built (1930s) backcountry huts. Our final evening we will enjoy a dinner cruise in Maui. The trip will offer a variety of accommodations ranging from average 3-star hotels (5 nights), Bed and Breakfast (2 nights), YMCA bunkhouses (3 nights), National Park backcountry hut (1 night), car camping (1 night) and backpack tent camping (3 nights). We will also enjoy a variety of meal options. Trip participants will be expected to plan and pay for all of their lunches during the trip. We will include stops at grocery stores for participants to purchase lunch items throughout the trip. While backpacking and camping, breakfasts and camp dinners will be planned and prepared as group meals. There will be about 3 or 4 dinners that will be on their own. 3 special dinners are included (luau, observatory dinner and dinner cruise) Yes No No If yes, please describe below: Co-leader: Yes No Leader: Yes No Not applicable: Yes No If yes, please list who has agreed to be your back-up in case one or both of you need to drop out. We will use Mauna Kea Summit Adventures as our outfitter for this excursion. If no, please describe the process you went through to find out that they were not required: NPS websites provide details about group permit requirements and there are none. Just backpacking experience and a healthy comfort level with exposure and cliffs. Yes No If yes, please describe below what you will do: We will offer two pre-trip backpack weekends. One will be offered in late summer and one in the fall. The trip co-leader will plan and conduct the summer trip and the trip leader will plan and conduct the fall trip (and return to the East coast). This will allow trip participants flexibility for their schedules and also allow ample time to prepare and get to know their fellow trip mates and even tentmates. Although a part of the United States, Hawaii has an enormous amount of different Asian and Pacific Island culture which is very different than what most of us are used to. We will experience this lifestyle and culture through food, their traditional luau and through interactions with the locals. We will also visit two of America's National Parks. Each national park in the NPS system offers unique history, wildlife and special features (lava!) not found in other places. We will explore the visitor centers at the national parks to learn more about the ecosystem and what makes it special. We will pay special attention to leave no trace principles for these parks. We will have an interpreted evening when we visit Mauna Kea that we will learn from experts about this special volcanic area.
