Fly commercial airline from Boston/New York to Zurich, Switzerland. Take trains to Zermatt utilizing SWISS PASS purchased in USA prior to departure. Stay at 3 star Hotel Silvana in Furi, a small village above Zermatt.Leaders will lead a strong intermediate to advanced hike each day. Splendid mountain views and varied terrain make for some of the best day hiking in the world. First few days' hikes are at lower levels for acclimatization. Then we take cable cars to start higher. All hikes are on well marked trails which are maintained by Zermatt, but have steep dropoffs in many places. One day we'll hike with a Swiss guide across the Gorner glacier to the Monte Rosa hut for lunch, and then back to hotel.Another day we will hike to the Hornli hutte(weather permitting) which is at the base of the Matterhorn from which the technical climbers begin their ascent of the Matterhorn. A day hike up the Trift gorge is also planned.Return to Zurich by train on Friday, stay overnight in a hotel near the airport. Depart for Boston and New York on Tuesday July 20th. Leader will be meeting participants at Zurich airport upon arrival as I will already be in Europe due to preceeding Major Excursion to Neustift Austria. Co leader will be traveling from Boston with some of the participants. By doing this we will be able to reduce airfare costs for the leader and coleader. There will however be the cost of train fare from Munich to Zurich as well as overnight accomodations in Zurich for the leader prior to the start of the second ME. Participants will be in double rooms with private bath. Accomodations in Zurich will be at a hotel near the airport in double rooms with private bath. Participants will stay here on the last night of the ME prior to their flight home. Leader will also stay here for two nights prior to the start of the ME since I will be in transit from the preceeding ME in Austria. Breakfast and dinner will be eaten at the Hotel Silvana. Lunch will be eaten on the trail either via lunch packed by participants from supplies purchased at local markets or eaten at small restaurants/huts/alms located along the trails. Dinner on the last night of the ME will be eaten at a restaurant close to the airport and hotel and will not be included in the cost of the trip. Our Swiss guide for the hike to the Monte Rosa hut is also the proprietor of the hotel . He will also instruct the participants in crampon usage. We will also be exposed to wonderful Swiss traditional music, a museum recreating life in Zermatt when the Matterhorn was just beginning to be climbed as well as the very hospitable Swiss residents. Reference web links: MEC Home Page: Forms: Deadlines: E-Mail Addresses: Revised 7/15/2016 30% deposit for Hotel Silvana due April 20th, 2010 Per Dany Biner, the owner of the hotel, the cancellation penalty is 50% but only if the rooms can't be rented, which he reports they usually can be in which case there is a full refund. $1000 initial deposit $1500 second payment due March 1st, 2010 $1450 final payment due May 1st, 2010 If you cancel after being accepted for the trip, $50 is non-refundable, but if you cancel after March 1st, 2010, minimally $500 is nonrefundable, if (and only if) another person takes your place. We will establish a waiting list. Should another person replace you, you will be charged only the $500 cancellation fee. However, your cancellation shall not raise the cost of the trip to any of the participants or the leaders. Thus, if you cancel and are not replaced, you will forfeit the $500 plus yhe per capita expenses already incurred and any other unpaid expenses for which the trip cannot obtain a refund.
