To lead a major excursion you must have current CPR and WFA at the time of your trip (or AWFA for all backcountry
trips). If you do not have the required level of certification at the time you submit your proposal or it will expire before
the date of your trip, you will need to make arrangements to recertify in a timely manner.

Executive summary
Please provide a brief
description of the trip and the
activities planned.
From our ecofriendly hotel, optional daily excursions on the island will offer kayaking,
hiking, swimming, snorkeling and cultural experiences. Depending on group interest,
activities will include a tour along the perimeter of the island; hikes in the Grand Etang
rainforest and around the Grand Etang volcanic lake known for its spiritual power; and
hikes to Mt. Catherine (the largest at 2757 ft), Mt. Qua Qua with its cloud forest, and
Levera National Park with its mangroves and bird sanctuary. Participants will learn about
spice production and the spice economy; local history of the Caribs, French, and
Africans; contemporary island cultures; and the geography, coral reefs, tropical flora and
fauna.
We plan to stay at the Blue Horizon Garden Resort, which is a moderately priced hotel
just 300 yards from Grand Anse Beach. Each suite has a private porch, kitchenette and
air conditioning. The resort has a freshwater pool, a fitness room, access to miles of
white sandy beach, and free use of snorkeling gear and kayaks.
We will plan for 2 or 3 dinners together. Otherwise participants will be responsible for
their own meals. Use of kitchenettes to prepare breakfasts and lunches will lower costs
considerably. Our hotel has an open-air West Indian restaurant overlooking the beach
and harbor that is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are many other local
restaurants in the area and in St. George's.

Benchmark for environmental sustainability and conservation. Information about the
geography and ecology of the island will be available daily from museums, guides and
interpretive displays at Grand Etang Forest Centre, Levera National Park and the La
Sagesse Nature Center. Information about the local cultures, history, agriculture and
economy will also help participants learn about the environment and its uses.
TOUR OPERATOR AND GUIDE SERVICE INFORMATION
Will this trip require a tour
operator or guide service
during part, or the entire
trip?
Yes
No
Please describe their services. If you are using a tour operator for the entire trip,
please describe why you will be using them rather than doing this trip on your own:
We will hire a local company for an island tour and a guide for any hike that may
require it. Most hikes will not. We will not negotiate this until we have certainty
that the trip will run and know the interests of participants. It is also hard for local
tour operators and guides to plan this far in advance and give prices. Several of the
activities will be done by sub-groups who will be responsible for payment and
arrangements.
