LOGISTICAL DETAILS OF TRIP Executive summary Please provide a brief description of the trip and the activities planned. Accommodations Please describe your plan for accommodation(s) Meals Please describe your plan for providing meals Permits or permissions Does the trip require special permits or permissions? (required on many U.S. federal lands and national parks) Special equipment Does the trip require special equipment? Special experience Does the trip require special skills on the part of the participant? Revised 7/15/2016 This trip will involve hiking inside Glacier National Park (GNP). Glacier Institute (GI), www.glacierinstitute.org, offers hands-on, field based experiences in collaboration with GNP. This trip includes 4 day-long courses in Glacier that are led by a GI instructor, and accompanied by a GI staff member, while hiking on Glacier's trails. GI works with the leaders to ensure a balance that allows learning while hiking. The other three 2 hiking days will not be full "courses" but rather "naturalist days" where GI will send one staffmember/naturalist with us who can answer general questions and will provide necessary permits for those hikes as well as the full "course" days. Each day there will be an intermediate and an advanced hike offered. See draft prospectus (excact hikes and sequence are still being finalized but that doesn't affect the budget) In West Glacier we will stay at Glacier Institute’s Glacier Park Field Camp (GPFC). GPFC is located just inside Glacier National Park, ½ mile from West Glacier on a bluff overlooking the Middle Fork of the Flathead River. There are 5 rustic, basic plywood cabins; each has 5 hostel-style twin beds with nightstands and lamps. There is a separate bathhouse with 4 individual showers and 5 individual toilets. Other buildings house the kitchen/dining area, the classroom and library. The sleeping cabins are not heated. Overall, one will be “roughing it” with spartan accommodations in a beautiful location. In Many Glacier we will stay in a local motel, double occupancy. All meals are included in the price. All meals at field camp will be provided and prepared by Glacier Institute in conjunction with a caterer. Leader led a similar trip in 2004/2006 and meals were satisfactory and cost is very good (at $28 per person per day for 3 meals not worth making meals ourselves for only slightly less money and a lot more work). Breakfasts and suppers at Many Glacier (MG) will be eaten in restaurants. Lunches at MG will be simple, prepared in a leaders room from lunch fixings brought in a cooler. Participants will be instructed to pay cash for any alcoholic drinks at meals out. Yes No If yes, please describe below: Glacier Institute will provide them. Yes No If yes, please describe below what type of equipment and how you will ensure that people know how to use it: Yes No If yes, please describe below what type of experience? Major Excursions Trip Proposal Form, page 2 of 5 Glacier National Park hiking Reji James/Robert Ricchi Pre-trip activities Do you plan to get your group together before the trip for an activity or social event? Conservation, education and recreation How will this major excursion meet the mission of the AMC? www.outdoors.org/about/ mission.cfm August 2-10, 2008 Yes No If yes, please describe below what you will do: At least one or two hikes, possibly a weekend overnight at a hut or AMC lodge. The educational component is the highlight of this trip. This trip offers field-based programs unparalleled on most major excursions. By working with the Glacier Institute, AMC can offer an approved trip that fits within GNP's regulations. We will have a specific topic and educator on 4 days; the other 2 days we will have a GI naturalist along to answer general questions. This is wonderful hiking, with the added benefit of learning along the trail. TOUR OPERATOR AND GUIDE SERVICE INFORMATION Will this trip require a tour operator or guide service during part, or the entire trip? Name of tour operator/guide service Tour operator website Safety record Please provide information about their safety record. Insurance Do they have liability insurance? Emergency response Please describe the outfitters’ response plan in the case of an emergency. Yes No Please describe their services. The Glacier Institute is an approved educational partner. It's mission is similar to the AMC's and they allow our group to stay at their facilities. Glacier Institute www.glacierinstitute.org GI is an approved educational partner of GNP with an excellent safety record. Liability? Yes No Maximum amt: $ $1 million/per person/per claim, maximum $3 million per incident. Yes No Are they willing to list AMC as an additional insured? GI's emergency response protocols will be followed. Also, GI is a collaborator of GNP and will notify GNP rangers of any emergencies within GNP. GI staff members are WFA trained.
