She has backpacked and day hiked extensivly in the state. She has lots of hiking companions and family that live in Alaska so has access to lots of resources. We will practive bear safety while hiking and backpacking so not to habituate bears to humans. We will respect all water sources (rivers, lakes, ponds, etc.) camping 200' from all water. We will use outhouses when provided and dig cat holes when necessary. We will visit the National Park Exhibit in Talkeetna to learn about Mt. McKinley and Brad Washburn's contributions to Alaska. While in Hatcher Pass, we will tour Indepence Mine to learn the history of this state park. Toward the end of our trip we will hike Crow Pass which is the historical old Iditerod Trail, passing remnants and artifacts of the gold rush period as well. Trail conditions, river crossings, weather, wildlife (bears, snakes, etc.) Climate/terrain Potential hazards With any hiking there will be risks regarding terrain, weather and bears. Response To prevent accidents, participants will have the proper hiking boots (broken in), we will recommend hiking sticks. Participants will be required to have rain gear (top and bottom), warm coat and or layering system, hat, and mittens.Leaders will carry a closed cell foam pad, bivy sack, and group first aid kit. Leaders will be trained in AWFA and CPR prior to the trip. We will be willing to turn around if weather deteriorates. Leaders will carry bear spray. Participants will be briefed on bear safety with written information (prior to the trip) and we will speak about the bears in Alaska before we hit the trail. We will also travel together as a group lower our risks of bear encounter. They will learn to never leave your pack unattended, hang food, toothpaste, no food in tents, etc. overnight. Bear proof containers available at no charge at Denali State Park. Leaders will have updated their AWFA and CPR prior to the trip. We will also carry emergency phone numbers for help in each area that we travel. We will be carrying a cell phone. There is generally reception from K'esugi Ridge. We have spoken with the ranger of this state park regarding proceedure if an emergency occurs. Phone state police first, who will contact rescue personel. A helicopter is always on stand by at Denali National Park for the area. We will take the additional insurance from the rental company, Jackie and I will each drive and we will ask one participant to also drive and stay together as a group when traveling. We will travel the Parks, Glen, Seward Highways and Hatcher Pass road. All paved except Hatcher Pass will be a slow going dirt road open in summers only. We will be carrying a cell phone and the emergency numbers for each area. Level of fitness, screening concerns, experience with equipment or activity Each applicant will be required to provide us with an application for this trip explaining past hiking experience (backpacking as well), regular exercise routines, health background (allergies, medications, conditions, etc.). They must be able to provide us with a leaders recommendation for this strenuous trip and we will speak with potential applicants by phone before accepting them on this major excursion. They will be asked about their knowledge of camp stove use and water purifiers. We will also remind participant two months prior to the trip to get out there and get some hiking in before this strenuous trip. We will ask that those bring equiptment try their stove and water purfiers for efficiancy prior to trip and those providing tent to set them up before we leave so to be sure all parts are included. Airline tickets will be purchased with participants own credit card. Ticket is theirs is they cancel. The bus ticket for Denali is in the persons name as is the plane ticket. Accomodations: as long as I cancel a week prior to arrival I will get a full refund.Car rental is cancel before arrival. $300.00 due within 10 days of acceptance on trip $1000.00 due by March 15, 2007 $ 900.00 balance due by April 15,2007 If I can fill the participant spot then they will own their airline ticket and possibly the $40.00 bus ticket for Denali. I could most likely refund full $ except the above mentioned (if we can fill their spot). We will take a wait list for this trip with $25.00 deposit (to insure they are serious) to be either returned or deducted from trip cost if there is a cancellation.
