The Echo360 Experience

Echo360 is a lecture capture and delivery system for recorded lectures, classes and other events. What makes Echo360
different from others is that there are two video channels. One video channel records the content (PowerPoint,
Keynote, Websites, video or whatever else is displayed on the projector) and the other video channel records the
speaker or presenter. Below is some helpful information that will enhance your Echo360 experience.
Viewing Devices
Echo360 videos are called Echoes. Echoes can be viewed on a multitude of devices. Not only can you view Echoes on
your desktop or laptop computers but now you are able to view recorded lectures, classes, instruction and other events
on your mobile devices. Apple, HTC, Samsung, Motorola and most other brands of smart phones and tablets are able to
view Echoes giving you the freedom to view content wherever and whenever, as long as you have a good internet
connection.
Since the screen size of mobile devices is much smaller than a standard computer screen the Echoes only play the
content video channel with audio. For full Echo viewing (content channel and people channel) use a laptop or desktop
computer.
EchoCenter
The EchoCenter is a web page that lists all of the Echoes created for a specific class or event. If a class is reoccurring you
will see a list of all Echoes with the newest at the top. This makes reviewing previous classes very convenient. In order
to select an Echo to watch, click on the “Play” button on the right side of the window. This will open the EchoPlayer and
the video will begin to play. A link to the EchoCenter will be provided to you through Sakai for classes or from the
Course Administrator for other events. See the following picture for more information about the EchoCenter.

EchoPlayer
The EchoPlayer is the page where you view the Echo. There are many user controls available in the EchoPlayer. You can
fast forward, rewind, play, pause, scroll through video, jump to a scene, adjust volume, change the playback speed,
adjust window size and placement and view class information.

Presenter:
As a presenter in a large classroom or auditorium, the recording of your lecture/event is scheduled to start and stop
EXACTLY as requested by the Course Administrator … for example, 8:00am-8:50am … and automatically sent to the
server for processing and uploaded to the Sakai course when complete. Work with your departmental contacts,
however, if you wish to disable the automation and review the recordings before you make them available to student
viewers. Keep in mind this will delay the delivery of the recording to your audience group; analytics tells us that the
students prefer immediate access over a cleaned-up file!
As a presenter using the Personal Capture Software, you are in complete control of your recording. You determine when
and where you want to record (at work or at home) at a time and place that is convenient for you. This is especially
helpful if you are recording small modules for integrating with other classroom instruction, such as demonstrations that
you can re-use in multiple situations. Your recorded video is saved on your hard drive, not the server, so be careful
about editing … once you do so it is changed forever. A better option is to upload the “raw” file for processing on the
server, and then make edits later. This will ensure the original version has been saved.
Echo360 has a variety of analytics and reports that can be discovered about your recorded lecture. Number of unique
views, as well as timeframes within the recording with the most views, are two such examples. This may help you
discover a problem area that the students are having difficulty understanding or some other reason for “hot spot” views
which may help you determine, for example, if a review of that particular material is necessary.
