Performance measure: Embedded assessment of the persuasive speech assignment Effectiveness Standard: At least 70% of a random sample of students will meet or exceed the expected outcomes as defined by the Communication faculty based on TBR Student Learning Outcomes for Oral Communication. All persuasive speeches in all COM 1010 classes were assessed Fall 2012. A 30% random sampling was taken and the sampling of speeches was pulled for compilation of results. The sample consisted of 360 students. See the table below. It should be noted that although all fell within the effectiveness standards, there is one area that need to be emphasized for improvement. It is the use of evidence in the speech. This was the lowest areas last year too. However there was an increase in the use of evidence area from 73% to 80% falling in the excellent or good areas. The faculty had incorporated a new unit in the curriculum and additional time was placed on research. After discussion, the faculty felt that the increased emphasis had made a difference in the students understanding the research process. The faculty agreed that continued exercises in research should be the emphasis for 2013.
